Fate of Amalur MMO Teetering

38 Studios

There is currently a great deal of turmoil surrounding Curt Schilling's Rhode Island-based company, 38 Studios. The team at 38 has been working on an MMO codenamed Copernicus in the world of Amalur. The recent single-player RPG, Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning, was actually developed by Big Huge Games, a separate, subsidiary company in Baltimore, MD with some overlap to 38 Studios.

Other sites have done a great job of covering the full details surrounding these financial woes, but the recent news that the company's employees have not been paid since May 1 and will lose their health care on Thursday at midnight makes things seem extremely dire. Staff of both 38 Studios and Big Huge Games have made cryptically sad posts on Twitter, but so far nothing official has been released about the fate of either company.

In the wake of this news, there have been media leaks of Copernicus. The following media includes a new fly-through of Amalur and the reveal of three of the game's playable races: Jottun, Dverga, and Almain. While not officially dead, this could possibly be the first and last look at the game at the center of this drama. The fate of this game, and the new project from Big Huge Games that began in March and is only referred to as "Next Big Thing," are both unknown.
