Interplay, a company that has published many RPGs including titles in the famous Balder's Gate series, has been closed down by the state of California after not paying several employees. Exployees were found to have no workers compensation insurance, and seven out the 14 said it had been a month since they had last received a paycheck.
Interplay has been fined $1,000 US dollars per employee for a total of $79,000. They also owe $432,000 to Arden Reality for their building, back taxes of $179,000, and are facing a lawsuit from BioWare for $156,000 in back Baldur's Gate royalties. Herve Caen, Interplay's CEO, hopes to have the insurance back soon, and believes Interplay can survive these problems.
