Wind Waker, Pokémon Make Waves

Nintendo's Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker is indeed sailing as smoothly as planned. That is to say, it has been sailing away from retailers, and into the homes of gamers. After shipping to North American retailers in late March, the game has already sold an astounding 1.1 million copies. In addition, GameCube hardware sales are up 20% since the game's arrival.

Also, to the delight of Nintendo, the recently unleashed Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire are running away with handheld game sales. Perhaps this has fuelled the sales of the Game Boy Advance SP. Nintendo has shipped 800,000 units of its frontlit GBA, and reports have said that this upgraded Game Boy is burning through the North American market. An additional 400,000 units have been shipped in Europe, where it has seen similar success.

To have such a combination (best-selling handheld game, best-selling console game, best-selling system) is certainly rare. Peter MacDougall of Nintendo sales and marketing noted, "Game Boy Advance SP, Zelda and Pokémon represent a three point play that players and retailers dream about."
