Indie Update: Fourth Edition
03.10.2017

ALEX FULLER
MANAGING EDITOR

Indie Games

Welcome to the fourth update of our series designed to help RPGamer cater to the ever-increasing number of indie titles that our staff regrettably does not have the resources to provide full coverage to. The idea of this column is to quickly pass on the word about certain games to our readers that they might otherwise not be made aware of, and we hope both readers and developers find this useful.

This fourth edition of our indie update column features the following titles: Neurovoider, Prevent the Fall, Forged of Blood, Spy DNA, Moonfall, and Smile Game Builder.

Neurovoider

Flying Oak Games' Neurovoider is a twin-stick shooter/RPG hybrid originally released for PC, Mac, and Linux via Steam in August 2016. Now the developer and the game's publisher Playdius Entertainment have announced that the game will be released for PlayStation 4 in North America on March 14, 2017 and in Europe on March 15, 2017, with an Xbox One released in both regions coming on March 17, 2017. The game will also be receiving a Nintendo Switch version later this year. The console versions will include all the content added today in the game's Extended Update on Steam.

Prevent the Fall

D.W.S.'s action RPG Prevent the Fall is a dungeon crawler designed for both regular PCs and virtual reality headsets. The game is currently undergoing a Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign, with the developer looking for $5,000 in funding by April 1, 2017. Prevent the Fall features both single-player and co-op multiplayer modes, with players given quests at a tavern before venturing out into its generated dungeons.

Forged of Blood

Another indie title now on Kickstarter is Indonesian developer Critical Forge's Forged of Blood. A turn-based tactical RPG, Forged of Blood is set in a morally grey, hard fantasy world, with player choices having meaningful impacts on the game's event. The developers are looking for S$150,000 (just over US$100,000) and are showing the game at this weekend's PAX East event in Boston. The game is currently in development for PC with a planned 2018 release.

Spy DNA

Spy DNA is a tactical squad-based RPG set around seventy years in the future where scientific advances allow players to command a squad of genetically-enhanced super-spies. Despite its futuristic setting, developer Shy Snake is attempting to base the gameplay heavily on reality in terms of both its weaponry and armour. Spy DNA is currently planned for release on PC in fall 2017 and is currently undergoing a campaign on Steam Greenlight.

Moonfall

Another indie title on Steam Greenlight is Moonfall, from Slovakian developer Fishcow Studio. Moonfall is a 2D action RPG set in a gothic industrial universe named Terra Nihil. The game has open levels with multiple paths through, as well as a real-time combat system where the AI enemies will team up against the player. Moonfall is being developed for PC, Mac, and Linux.

Smile Game Builder

The final title in this edition is Smile Game Builder. As its name suggests, Smile Game Builder is an RPG creation suite from Japanese studio SmileBoom. The suite utilises 3D models and maps and promises that users will be able to create games without the need for any programming skills. Smile Game Builder is available to download now from its official website for $79.99, with a free trial available.
