Indie Update: Third Edition
02.24.2017

ALEX FULLER
MANAGING EDITOR

Indie Games

Welcome to the third in a new series of updates designed to help RPGamer cater to the ever-increasing number of indie titles that our staff regrettably does not have the resources to provide full coverage to. The idea of this column is to quickly pass on the word about certain games to our readers that they might otherwise not be made aware of, and we hope both readers and developers find this useful.

This third edition of our indie update column features the following titles: Sacred Fire, Songbringer, The Deal, Krai Mira, and Gataela.

Sacred Fire

Slovakian developer Poetic Studio recently announced Sacred Fire, a turn-based psychological RPG. The game sees players leading a band of resistance fighters in ancient Caledonia (Scotland) against the invading Roman Empire. Sacred Fire is said to have a very tactical and political focus, requiring players to not only acquit themselves in general survival skills but also in political manoeuvring. Sacred Fire is currently on Steam Greenlight, with a Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign planned for March 2017. The developer has already stated that it has recruited the vocal talents of Doug Cockle (Geralt from The Witcher games), who narrates its latest trailer.

Songbringer

Wizard Fu and Double Eleven recently announced Songbringer, a procedurally-generated action RPG set in the Milky Way Galaxy in 13,000 BC. The game follows Roq, a carefree character searching the galaxy for the ultimate party aboard his ship, the titular Songbringer, at least until he manages to awaken an ancient evil army. Songbringer's overworld is generated by a six-letter world seed code at the start of the game, with ten dungeons placed within it. Local multiplayer will be available, with the second player controlling Roq's sidekick Jib. Songbringer is planned for release on PC, Mac, Linux, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One in summer 2017, with hands-on demos to be available at PAX East in Boston in March.

The Deal

Indie publisher Aldorlea Games released another new title on Steam in the form of The Deal. Developed by Orfeas Game Studio using RPG Maker MV, The Deal follows Cyrus, Myrella, Jonathan, and Donna on their journey across the continent of Carca. The Deal is available for PC and priced at $6.99/£4.99/€6.99.

Krai Mira

Eastern European developer TallTech Studio originally released its Fallout-inspired post-apocalyptic RPG Krai Mira for PC on Steam in July 2016. Now the developer and independent publisher IMGN.PRO have announced Krai Mira: Extended Cut. This new version of the game offers many improvements to the original release, including new localisations (German, French, and Polish), additional dialogue, new encounters, bug fixes, UI changes, and more. Krai Mira: Extended Cut will be released for PC on April 4, 2017, priced at $12.99/£9.99/€11.99.

Gataela

Gataela is a Victorian Steampunk RPG for PC from Atemly Games. The developer recently began a campaign on Steam Greenlight, also releasing a demo that is available to download now from itch.io. Gataela features two distinct battle systems, one a tradition turn-based combat system, the other a debate system where players try to convince, negotiate, or debate with NPCs. The game is set in the country of Gataela, which is still recovering from a civil war that took place a decade previously, and follows Zack, who goes to his local lord requesting aid.
