I know I said last time that I had a small update, but this one is even tinier. I've been caught up playing Tales of Berseria, Asdivine Hearts, and some other games, so my Final Fantasy time was more limited this week. That said, Square Enix is doing a PSN sale on Final Fantasy games, so I decided it would be a fair time to check out the PS1 Classic version of Final Fantasy VI. I broke out my PSP and fired it up.

If you want to catch up on my prior pieces, here's a link to last week's Issue 5.

Final Fantasy VI (PSP, PS1 Classic)

Needless to say, I'm a big Final Fantasy VI fan. I first played FFVI on the SNES, but I still picked up the Final Fantasy Anthology on PS1 back in the day to play FFV for the first time and to replay FFVI. These versions were far from optimal as they suffered from awful loading times, making everything just feel so slow. I had hoped that it was just because they were on discs and that the digital versions might be better, but sadly not.

Final Fantasy VI is great in any format, but I'd be very hesitant to recommend this release. I don't know why everything here is still slow to run, but it is. The game content is still fantastic, so if this is the only way you can play this game don't let that stop you. In just playing through the Narshe intro, I found myself praying for Switch to offer this on Virtual Console instead so that I could play a better version portably. To sum things up briefly, I would recommend avoiding the PSN release if you have any other options.

In the meantime, I would love to know your favorite character combos for this game. Please share in the comments.
