Originally called the White Engine, Square Enix has revealed the new name for the company-wide 3-D game development system is now Crystal Tools. Formerly developed as a Playstation 3 game creation platform, Taku Murata, GM of Square Enix’s research and development team, announced at the Game Developers Conference that Crystal Tools will now support game creations on multiple platforms.
At the conference, Murata presented screenshots of Crystal Tools' character model viewer and cut-scene editor. Designers using the cut-scene editor will be allowed to craft real-time cinematic scenes using tools similar other movie editors. Murata has also confirmed that Crystal Tools will be used in the development of Square Enix’s upcoming MMORPG.
