Rengoku: Tower of Purgatory

Set for a Japanese release date of January 27, 2005, Rengoku: Tower of Purgatory is a new action-based RPG from Hudson Soft for the PSP. The game's dark, science-fiction-based story revolves around an android by the name of A.D.A.M., who is imprisoned inside an eight-story tower after the end of a major world war. The tower itself hosts over 1,000 dungeons and is filled with deadly enemies out to destroy him. As A.D.A.M, players will try to make it from the bottom of the tower to the top floor, which is called "Rengoku" (Japanese for "Purgatory").

There is no leveling-up in Rengoku, nor are there any additional party members. A.D.A.M is the only character players will be able to control throughout the game, and instead of improving with battle experience, he will have to steal weapons from defeated enemies in order to become stronger. The weapons that A.D.A.M can use throughout the game will come in four basic categories: head guns, arm cannons (one for each arm), and foot missile launchers. All of them will have limited durabilities, so players will have to constantly look out for replacements.

The character designs for Rengoku come from acclaimed manga artist Jun Suemi, and the story is based loosely on the poetic work of Dantes Alighieri's The Divine Comedy. Besides a single-player adventure mode, the game will also feature a multiplayer setting called "pankration mode," where up to four players can fight against each other in customized battles.

There has been no mention, yet, of a North American release.
