Square Presents CGI Demonstration
Square

As a part of the ACA Media Arts Festival, which took place earlier this week, Square presented a select group of attendants with an exclusive look at what goes on behind the scenes at their CGI production facilities. The seminar, which took place at Silicon Studio in Tokyo, focused on Square's digital content over the last year, including the production of Final Fantasy IX and Vagrant Story.

Mr. Tsukamoto, Square's visual works producer, explained the process Square goes through in creating their CGI sequences. The talk was illustrated by graphics from such Square titles as Final Fantasy VIII, Final Fantasy IX, and Chrono Cross, all in various stages of completion. Mr. Tsukamoto mentioned that the company's current computer graphics studio is composed of 256 Linux-based systems, each running on an 800 mHz Pentium processor. The audience also had a chance to see the motion capturing process take place, a method which is commonly utilized in Square games, and then later touched up manually to create a more natural movement. Attendants were also treated to some movie clips from several titles still under development, although the identities of the games were not disclosed.

Mr. Tsukamoto closed by stating that "[Square's] techniques for CGI creation have improved with each game we have made. Taking full advantage of the knowledge cultivated through our past creations, we are currently concentrating on developing Final Fantasy X with everything we've got. So, you can expect FFX's graphics to raise the bar once again." The company's current focus is centered on having Final Fantasy X available for viewing at the Tokyo Game Show later this month.
