Terra, Incognita

Author's Comments

A theme from one of my favorite RPGs of all time—Terra (I refuse to call it Tina; the name is simply too common for one of the most complex heroines in all of RPG history.) was rather easy to play around with as it has a very simple structure. I made a conscious effort not to overdo the remixing, though, as it is in that simplicity that the theme finds its beauty. The remix is an exercise in syncopation. Though not incredibly difficult, the rhythmic difference between what is played by either hand can be rather confusing.

Composed using Sibelius 5 and rendered by Kouen using SONAR 7 Producer Edition.

Wading in mid-thigh-deep floodwater? Way uncool. Taking two capsules of doxycycline and retching like a pregnant woman in her first trimester? Far worse.

In case some people are clueless about what the hell I'm rattling off about, allow me to elucidate. My place received more rainfall in a single day than it usually does in an entire month... The result? The worst flood I've ever experienced in my life, and a disaster last encountered by the nation in 1967. Luckily, I live in an elevated part of town, so I knew that flooding wasn't a problem, it was the act of going home from the hospital and maintaining my balance as I trudged through quasi-rivers that was the problem. This was a week ago. As I type this update, I look outside the internet café I'm working in (as my internet connection went bonkers and hasn't been fixed) and squirm a little—a Category 5 storm is looming...

Lets talk less about weather and more about music. How funny that the piece I am featuring today is based on Terra, when I just babbled earlier about... aqua. Anyway, this piece's style is heavily influenced by one of my favorite piano pieces of all time: Theme of Sadness from the piano album of Genso Suikoden. My remix's title makes use of the well-known cartography terms used for uncharted territories. Similarly, Terra's identity and raison d'être are unknown to her, at least in the beginning of the game. Her realization is symbolized in the end of the piece by a sequence of subdominant-to-tonic passages (usually utilized in the ending of church pieces) before culminating in the easily recognizable arpeggio attributed to the Final Fantasy series. Go ahead! Download it and give it a try.

That's about it for this installment of Sound Test. I apologize profusely for the tardiness. Have a great (and dry) weekend, guys!
