A man named Ganondorf, an evil thief from the Gerudo tribe based in the desert in West Hyrule, has the ambition to take over the world using an artifact called the Triforce. Your mission is to infiltrate Ganondorf's defenses and put an end to his evil scheme. This Dossier should help you out in your mission to, yet again, save the world. In this Dossier, there will be a few references to certain places by number, so go to where that item is (or was)... i.e. "go to the area around Piece of Heart #21" means go to the Lost Woods and the hanging target. These references will not appear in short walkthroughs or future Mini-Walkthroughs to avoid confusion. 11 1111 1 11 11 LISTS 11 11 11111111 1.1: Items Most of all the items you can get, minus the bartering items and the masks (see sections 1.7 and 1.8, respectively). They are roughly ordered in the order you can first get them or encounter them. Kokiri Sword: Kokiri Forest, in the hole near the Training Center. Deku Shield: Purchase in Kokiri Shop for 40 rupees. Don't try to use it to defend against fire, or it'll burn. Deku Nuts: Can be found in pots, grass, won from enemies, or purchased in shops. Use these to stun enemies momentarily. Deku Sticks: Can be found in pots, won from enemies, or purchased in shops. They make good torches. Fairy Slingshot: Found on the second floor of the Deku Tree. Spiders of the Curse, are in numerous quantity in Hyrule thanks to the greed of a family in Kakariko Village. Defeating these spiders will undo the curse that the family put upon themselves. Since they were greedy, one can only assume that they were rich at one point, and they would gladly give their treasures to whomever kills off the Gold Skulltulas. One hundred Gold Skulltulas are spread over the land of Hyrule, and it's up to you to exterminate each and every one of them. Prizes: After killing the specified amount of Gold Skulltulas, return to the House of Skulltula for a reward. 10: Adult's Wallet 20: Stone of Agony 30: Giant's Wallet 40: Bombchu 50: Piece of Heart 100: Huge Rupee Locations: Many of these spiders lurk on high places, so don't expect to reach them all when you first start out. Return there as an adult, and play it again for him to jog his memory. 1.7: The Biggoron's Sword The Biggoron's Sword is twice as strong as the Master Sword and won't break, unlike other 2-handed swords you might run across. Being 2-handed, you won't be able to use your shield, however. Getting the sword is a long, tedious process which involves getting from one point in Hyrule to another, sometimes with a stiff time limit. I suggest you get Epona (see Section 1.9) and get at least the first three medallions in order to make this much easier. Also, whenever you have a time limit, do not, I repeat, DO NOT use any Ocarina warps. With that in mind, here are the steps for getting the sword: Note: You must be adult Link. 1. Get the Pocket Cucco Egg from the girl that raises cuccos in Kakariko Village. When it hatches the next morning, wake up Talon, who is sleeping in a building across from the shooting gallery. Return the Pocket Cucco to the girl. 2. She gives you Cojiro. Head to the Lost Woods, and go to where the lone Skull Kid was. A dude will be sleeping there, so give him Cojiro. He gives you an Odd Mushroom, which will spoil in three minutes. Now go back to Kakariko Village with Epona. 3. In Kakariko Village, go to the potion shop, exit through the back door, down the ladder, up the stairs near the secret grotto, and into the other potion shop. Give the mushroom to the old lady, and you'll get the Odd Potion. 4. Go back to the Lost Woods, to where the lone Skull Kid. Give the Odd Potion to the Kokiri girl, and she'll give you the Poacher's Saw. 5. In Gerudo Valley, exchange the Poacher's Saw for the Broken Goron's Sword with the foreman outside the tent. 6. Go to the summit of Death Mountain and give the sword to Biggoron. He'll work on it, but only when his eyes don't itch. He gives you a Prescription for King Zora's eyedrops. 7. Go to Zora's Domain. Give the Prescription to King Zora. He's out of stock, so he gives you the main ingredient in the drops -- an Eyeball Frog. 8. Head to the Laboratory at Lake Hylia with Epona, and give the frog to the man. He goes to prepare a frying pan for the frog, but then realizes that it's for eyedrops, not for supper, and gives you the eyedrops. However, these eyedrops don't have preservatives, so they'll spoil. 9. Ride Epona as far as Kakariko Village, dash to the summit, and give the eyedrops to Biggoron. It'll take three days, so he gives you a Claim Check. 10. Either kill three days around Hyrule, or play the Sun's Song until three days pass. Get the Biggoron sword from Biggoron. 1.8: The Happy Mask Shop Masks are fun to tote around, especially the Mask of Truth. Using the Mask of Truth, you can interact with those oh-so-annoying Gossip Stones and get hints and tips as well as useless information. The center of the mask trade in Hyrule is the Happy Mask Shop, situated in Hyrule Castle Town Market. Also, there's a secret grotto in the Lost Woods called the Forest Stage. This grotto is in in the grass in the rear of the area where two Deku Scrub salesmen reside. To begin, go to the shop as child Link after opening the gate to Death Mountain. 1. Keaton Mask: it's a fox mask. Sell it to the guard by the gate to Death Mountain for 15 rupees. 2. Skull Mask: sell to the lone Skull Kid in the Lost Woods for only 10 rupees. 3. Spooky Mask: sell to the kid in Kakariko Graveyard who idolizes Dampe for 30 rupees. 4. Bunny Hood: after beating the Forest Temple, a man who idolizes rabbits will appear in Hyrule Field. Sell it to him when you can catch up to him at night for quite a bit of money. These masks are not salable: 5. Mask of Truth: wear it and talk to Gossip Stones. 6. Goron Mask* 7. Zora Mask* 8. Gerudo Mask* *talk to respective races for some fun reactions 1.9: Epona Your horse, bred from the best in Lon Lon Ranch. While riding Epona, you can shoot arrows with the Fairy Bow, but you will not be able to control her unless you cancel shooting the bow. When you have Epona, she can be summoned by playing Epona's Song anywhere in Hyrule Field, Lake Hylia, Gerudo Valley, or Gerudo Fortress. Steps for getting Epona: 1. Learn Epona's Song as a child from Malon in Lon Lon Ranch. This connects you to Epona. 2. As an adult, head over to Lon Lon Ranch. Have at least 70 rupees. Talk to Ingo, and pay for riding a horse. Call Epona with her song, and mount and ride her round. 3. After your time expires, purchase another ride, call and mount Epona, target Ingo while on Epona, and talk to him. He challenges you to a race. 4. Race Ingo. Use your carrots to keep up with him, but never, ever, use that last carrot, or you'll slow down while waiting for them to replenish. 5. After beating Ingo twice, he'll lock you in. Ride round, get speed with carrots, and jump over the main fence. After getting Epona: 1. (Optional) Go back to Lon Lon Ranch, and challenge Malon's obstacle course. Finish under 50 seconds, and she'll send a cow to your house. 2. Use her to jump the bridge at Gerudo Valley. 3. (Optional) Go to the Gerudo Horseback Archery Range and get Piece of Heart #35, and the quiver upgrade. 4. (Optional) Go Poe-hunting for Bottle #4. 5. Use her for meeting the time limits for getting Biggoron's sword. 222222 22 22 22 22 22 ENEMY STRATEGIES 22 22 22222222 Section 2.1: Minor Enemies There are tons of enemies in this game, and naturally, some are harder then others. Most attacks from most enemies can be easily defended with a shield; I'll indicate when a shield won't work. I'll try to list all the enemies and one way to beat them with ease: Deku Baba: Type A: It's a mutated Venus Fly Trap. Stationary. Encountered in Kokiri Forest. Just hack it with your sword. Type B: This one lunges at you. Encountered in the Deku Tree. Hit it on its head, and it'll stun it. Hit it again to kill it. Type C: Giant Deku Baba, a.k.a. Type B with steroids. Gets killed the same way, though. Skulltulas: Type A: Skullwalltula, a.k.a. "normal" skulltula. Shoot it with something or just hack it. Type B: Big Skulltula. Let it sit there, and then it'll turn around after some time, exposing its brown belly, which you can slice with your sword. Type C: Gold Skulltula. Not Z-Targetable. Just shoot it or skewer it with your sword. Gohma Larva: Just hack it twice. Deku Scrub: Type A: Normal green-colored Deku Scrub. Bounce back a single nut at it with your shield. Type B: Mad Scrub. Bounce back a nut at it, and it'll start to run away. Give chase and kill it with your sword. Wolfos: Type A: Normal Wolfos. Use your shield to defend its attacks, and hit it when it is about to attack. Type B: White Wolfos. Same deal. Peahat: Type A: It's a flying weed whacker. Avoid its blades, Z-Target it, and attack the root with your sword. Type B: Peahat Larva. Use your shield to defend, and it'll usually crash. If not, shoot it down. Skull Kid: He's not your enemy. Play your Ocarina. Stalchild: Use your sword. Poe: Type A: Z-Targetable, but it'll disappear. Just go up to it and slice away with your sword. Type B: Z-Targetable, and won't dissapear, but hard to reach with your sword. Shoot it. Type C: In the Forest Temple, there are 4 sister Poes. The first three are simple; just Z-Target them and hack away. The fourth one is a bit harder, because she splits into four. Get a good view of all four, and go stand somewhere with your bow. When they appear, the real one will spin around once; shoot her. Type D: Big Poe, which appears while riding Epona. Not Z-Targetable (at least I don't think so). Shoot it with your bow. Tektite: Type A: It's like a jumping spider. Red. Z-Target and use your sword. Type B: Blue. Get it on solid ground and use your sword, or shoot it from afar. Beamos: It's a rotating eye with lasers. Bomb it. Dodongo: Type A: Baby Dodongo. Slice it, then get away before it blows up. Type B: Normal Dodongo. Watch for its fiery breath; it'll burn up your Deku Shield. Z-Target, and get around to its rear end, then slice its tail. It'll explode when it dies, so back off. Keese: Type A: It's just a normal bat. Z-Target and shoot. Type B: Fire Keese. Don't defend with a Deku Shield, or you'll lose it. Z-Target and shoot. Type C: Ice Keese. Defend with your shield, then Z-Target and shoot. Lizalfos: Z-Target, defend with shield, and attack whenever you can. Armos: Stun it with a Deku Nut, then hit it. ReDead: Play the Sun's Song to freeze it, then start hacking away. Guay: Birds that usually fly in from behind you. When you hear the battle music, turn around and Z-Target, then shoot them. Octorok: Use your shield to bounce back the rocks they shoot. Shabom: It's a bubble. Boomerang it. Bari: Type A: Small jellyfish called Biri. Z-Target and boomerang it. Type B: Big jellyfish called Bari. Z-Target and boomerang it, then go in and use your sword. (more to come) Section 2.2: Bosses This section covers the main bosses you encounter. Gohma (Deku Tree): Simple. Z-Target it, then get your Slingshot ready. When its eye turns red, shoot it. It'll drop to the floor below, where you can hack away with your sword. Kind Dodongo: Also very simple. Z-Target it, then lob a bomb in its mouth when it prepares to blast you with fire. When it's stunned, slash his head with your sword. After he gets up, get to the inside corner of the ring so that he doesn't mow you over, then repeat. Barinade: Get your Boomerang out, and when Barinade releases its Bari, Z-Target and Boomerang each and every one. When it runs out of Bari, it'll come after you, so Z-Target it and Boomerang it to stun it, then go in with your sword. (more to come) 333333 33 33 33 33 SECRETS 33 33 33 333333 3.1: Secret Grottoes The land of Hyrule is vast, and dotted with secret grottoes all over the place. Death Mountain Crater: *: The circle of stones near the entrance to the summit of Death Mountain. -: Turn left after coming from Goron City. Gerudo Fortress: &: Behind the crates, and near two doors resides a Fairy's Fountain. 3.2: Cows This is so cool! Have an empty bottle, and play Epona's Song in front of it. She'll feel so comfortable that she'll give you Lon Lon Milk for free. 3.3: Fairies Fairies are extremely reliable partners, i.e. Navi. Red fairies are also quite helpful, since they replenish your health. You can catch one in a bottle, and when you die, it'll revive you. Ever noticed how Navi flys off to some weird spot of little or no significance, like the flagpole up on Death Mountain? Well, Navi senses fairies, so play the Song of Storms or the Sun's Song to summon them. Other places to get fairys include: - Magic Bean Sprouts: Play the Song of Storms to water them and summon fairies. - The Oasis near the Spirit Temple: Hop on the rock, and play the Song of Storms. Tons of fairies will appear. - Gossip Stones: Play Zelda's Lullaby, Epona's Song, or the Song of Storms to summon a fairy. - Deku Sticks: Let a butterfly land on a Deku Stick, and it'll turn into a fairy. 3.4: Rupee-Gaining Places Low on cash? Go to these places, and get rich quick: $: Any place where you can get a Huge Rupee, get it. Even though it's a one time thing, 200 rupees is surely a lot of cash. $: The guard house near the entrance to the Hyrule Castle Town Market. Break open some pots for at least 30 rupees, exit, and reenter for some more. $: The singing frogs on Zora's River. Play their oh-so-easy game, and get 50 rupees each time you win. $: The Treasure Box game in Hyrule Castle Town Market. It's the easiest game you have to pay for that has a huge payoff; 50 rupees for a 10 rupee investment. Just make sure you have a Lens of Truth. 3.5: Scarecrows Scarecrows are helpful allies that can be used as a Hookshot target for grappling to hard to reach secret places. Here are their locations; play the Scarecrow's song whenever you're near one and Navi turns green and flies to some remote spot: Sacred Forest Meadow: Avoid the Moblins by calling for a Scarecrow right before you enter the narrow passageways. Dodongo's Cavern: Call for a Scarecrow in the hallway with the Baby Dodongos and the blue switch. Lake Hylia: Call for a Scarecrow to appear on the roof of the laboratory. Forest Temple: Call for a Scarecrow to appear on a ledge around Gold Skulltula #73. Fire Temple: There's one in the boulder maze that allows you to get up to the 2 Gold Skulltulas waiting for you and a path to a Huge Rupee. Shadow Temple: 1. There's one near the boat that leads to a Gold Skulltula. 2. After hopping off the boat, call for one to appear on the right side of the chasm. Gerudo Fortress: Call for a Scarecrow near the Treasure Box on the roof. Gerudo Training Center: Call for a Scarecrow in the room with the cyclops statues that you shoot with your bow. Spirit Temple: There's one on the third floor, in the room with the huge statue hugging the north wall. He's on the northwest ledge. 3.6: Playing With Your Ocarina Besides opening passages, showing your connection with the Royal Family, making Gorons dance, etc., the Ocarina also does a few helpful things, like: - summoning fairies (see Section 3.3) - summoning Scarecrows (see Section 3.5) - gaining Pieces of Heart (see Section 1.3) - calling for Song of Time Blocks in dungeons (see Section 3.7) - playing fun melodies and composing your own... A bit more into that last one... to make your own melodies, here's a helpful key: KEY: A, Cu, Cl, Cd, Cr = A, C-Up, C-Left, C-Down, C-Right Z = Z (half-step down (flat)) R = R (half-step up (sharp)) U, D = Control Stick Up, Control Stick Down A number before a controller configuration means play that note that many times. so Z-D-A means hold Z, hold the Control Stick down, and hit A, and you'll play a low B. & R-Cd means hold R, and hit C-Down, and you'll play a F sharp. & 3-A means hit A three times, and you'll play 3 low D's. --^-----------------------------------------------11--- / | 10 |--|--------------------------------------9------------ / 8 -_/-------------------------------7-------------------- /^\ 6 |@--/---------------------5---------------------------- \ / 4 --/---------------3------------------------------------ 2 --- -1- 0 B C D E F G A B C D E F 0: Z-D-A 1: D-A 2: A 3: U-A 4: Cd 5: U-Cd 6: Cr 7: Cl 8: D-Cu 9: Cu 10: U-Cu 11: R-U-Cu (if you can come up with a better treble clef ASCII drawing, don't hesitate to mail) Here's a sampler of a couple of melodies I recomposed: Aeris's Theme (from FF7) R-Cd, Cr, Cu, D-Cu, Cr, U-A R-Cd, Cr, Cu, D-R-Cu, U-Cu, Cu, Cl, D-R-Cu, Cr, U-A The entire Song of Time Cr, A, Cd, Cr, A, Cd, Cr, D-Cu, Cl, U-Cd, Cd, U-Cd, Cr, A, D-A, U-A, A James Bond Theme (I couldn't resist) U-A, U-Cd, R-Cu, Cu, U-Cd, Z-Cl, Cl U-Cd, U-R-Cd, U-Cd, U-Z-Cd, D-Z-A, U-A, D-R-A 3-U-A, R-Cd, U-A, R-Cd, 3-U-Cd, R-Cd, U-Cd, R-Cd 9-Cl Willow & Hoops (lilshrimp3@aol.com) does some nice ones too, I believe his docs are on RPGamer, too, so go check it out. 3.7: Blue Song of Time Blocks These blue blocks are summoned, moved, or removed by playing the Song of Time in various places to help you get to where you're going: Goron City: As an adult, go to the lava pit and play it to get in Longshot range for the target across the pit. Graveyard: After Dampe's race, play the tune. Forest Temple: Play the Song of Time at the northwest corner of the main room. Fire Temple: Play it at the northern part of the huge lava pit with the jet platforms. Ice Cavern: At the Blue Fire torch in the room with the sliding block and the silver rupees, play the Song of Time to reach red rupees. Water Temple: After getting the Longshot, play the Song of Time to gain access to a lower part of the dungeon. Gerudo Training Ground: Play the Song of Time in the lava room when you get stuck. 3.8: Gossip Stones Littered around Hyrule, these stones are fun to play around with, but they serve two practical purposes: 1. To tell the time when hit by a sword. 2. To give you small hints, tips, and useless information when you wear the Mask of Truth (see Section 1.8). Besides that, try bombing one. Or use Din's Fire or magical arrows. Maybe even hit one with your hammer. It's crazy, and kinda entertaining for those long, boring days when you have nothing else to do with the game. 66 66 66666 666 66 OTHER STUFF 66 66 666 666 666666 6.1: Copyright Information This Dossier is (C) 1998 by The Q Branch.
