MISCELLANEOUS QUESTIONS 1. What is Romancing SaGa 3? Romancing SaGa 3 is a game made for the Super Famicom by Square, released only in Japan. It is actually the sixth game in the SaGa series, the first three being for the Game Boy and released in the United States as "Final Fantasy Legend" I, II, and III. 2. What is the Free Scenario System? At the start of the game, you can choose to play as a number of different characters. The story will be slightly different depending on who you pick. (Not completely different as in SaGa Frontier) 3. Will I be able to play through RS3 with this FAQ? I can't read Japanese, so the walkthrough was written to be usable without knowing Japanese. However, the ability to read Katakana is required. Most of the weapon techniques, names, etc. are actually English words translated with Katakana. Hiragana is a plus, but you will probably be able to make it just knowing Katakana. 4. Help! I'm stuck. won't happen! won't show up on the map! It's very easy to get stuck in RS3, especially if you're like me and can't read Japanese. Sometimes a place just won't show up on the map or an event just won't happen. There are a few things you can try: First, talk to everyone, and go to the bartenders and choose the first and third options(the second option removes a character). Second, a character won't join you if you already have six in your party. Remove one by going to the bartender and choosing the second option, then the character's name. Eclair won't leave your party this way, to get rid of her you have to go to Riburofu. I've heard that some events won't happen unless your HP is high enough, but I'm not sure if this is true. 5. Why don't I get any money when I win battles? Unlike in Final Fantasy, where everything from rabbits to ghosts have fistfuls of cash, only some enemies in RS3 will drop aurums when you beat them. Generally animals don't have money, but goblins and more humanoid creatures do. Usually you only get a little money, though. Later in the game when you get the Royal Ring you will be able to get as much money as you want(see the Walkthrough: 38. GET RICH QUICK). 6. This weapon has 25 attack power, yet I do almost no damage! That's because your character isn't trained to use that particular type of weapon. There are four classes of weapons: swords, spears/short swords, axes/hammers, and bows. See question 9 for how to check your weapon level. 7. I got a new character, but the same old five are in my party when I go to battle. How do I use the new one? Go to Battle Formation and switch your character into your main battle party. See question 9 for how to do this. 8. I bought 99 Tonics, but I can't use them! You have to equip them. See question 9 for how to do this. 9. How do I use the Menu Screen? When you're in an area, push Select and you'll get the menu screen. On the left you have your characters, their names, and their HP and LP. The choices you have are: Equip Waza Jutsu Item Objective Battle Formation Config Save When you are selecting a character with 'Equip', 'Weapon', or 'Magic' you can see their stats. On the right side it looks like this: HP 539 LP 9/10 WP 75/80 JP 5/5 ? Sword level ? Axe level ? Spear level ? Bow level ? Martial Arts level ? Magic level(of a particular type) ? EQUIP: To equip weapons, shields, and items, use the top four spaces. To equip armor use the bottom four spaces. The statistics of the item that the pointer is on is shown in the bottom right corner. In general you can only equip one of each type of armor but you can equip as many gems as you want. WAZA(Weapon techniques): If you've played SaGa Frontier you know how to use this. You can equip different techniques of the different kinds of weapons. The types are on the right and the techniques you've equipped are on the left. Push 'A' to get a list of the available techniques for this type of weapon. I will often refer to the types in this FAQ as: Sword type 1 Sword type 2 Axe Hammer Short sword Spear Bow Martial arts Defense The left side shows what techniques you have equipped. Items in red are ones you haven't mastered yet. If you unequip them you'll lose them. Items in black have been mastered. If you unequip them you'll still be able to equip them later. To unequip a technique, select the bottom option from the list of techniques(the one with no picture) and then select the technique to remove. Some weapons, like Harid's Kamsheen and the Ice Sword, have special techniques associated with them. These will not show up on this screen. JUTSU(Magic): This shows a list of your magic spells and their JP cost. ITEM: This is a list of your items. Push left and right to get more screens of items. You can carry up to four screens of stuff. To trash an item, select it once and move the cursor down to the extra option that has appeared on the bottom of the item list. OBJECTIVE: I can't read Japanese, so it's not really useful to me. You can use my walkthrough to help you figure out where to go. BATTLE FORMATION: I don't really know that much about this, because I usually just used 'Free Fight' and 'Desert Lance'. However, I have heard that some secret combination techniques require special battle formations. What I usually use this for is to change party members in and out of my main five. First select a battle formation('Free Fight' is the regular one). Then select a character once and switch it with another character. Your front five will fight in the battles. CONFIG: The top one selects Stereo(left option) or Monoral(right option). I'm not sure what the bottom one selects. SAVE: You can save your game. Pretty self-explanatory. 10. I equipped four weapons, how come I can only use one? You have to push left and right. See III. BATTLES for more about battles. 11. How do I learn Waza(weapon techniques)? Whenever you use a weapon, there's a finite chance that you will learn a new Waza for that weapon, that is, if your technique screen isn't full(see question 12). Some characters are specialists at a particular weapon type and will learn Waza much faster for that type. If you use a Waza often enough, you may master the technique, and everyone can equip it from the 'Waza' screen. In addition, the person using it will require 1 less WP to use it. You also won't lose it if you unequip it because it's already been mastered. Finally, the stronger the enemy you're fighting the more Waza you will learn from it. A trick is to find a mini-boss that you can run from, fight it until you learn a technique, then run and fight it again. 12. At the beginning, I learned a whole bunch of techniques, but now I never learn them anymore! Maybe your technique list is full. If you don't have an empty space in your list of equipped techniques, you won't learn any new ones. Check 'Waza' under the menu screen. 13. How do I gain levels? Each time you win a battle, you'll gain something, either HP, WP, JP, or weapon ability. If you've played SaGa Frontier you know how this works. The stronger the enemy you beat, the more likely it is you will get stronger in weapons. Note that you'll gain levels based on what you do, e.g., if you use spears, you won't gain sword ability. 14. Why do the enemies always attack first? Because you ran into them. If you are running with the 'Y' button, you will be surprised and the enemies will strike first. This also happens if an enemy runs into your back. If you walk into the enemy's back you will strike first. 15. The random enemies are so weak that I hardly gain any levels when I beat them! It seems that after you beat a certain number of enemies, you move up a class of enemies and you'll be able to gain levels. So if you're very efficient and gain a lot of levels in a small number of battles, eventually you'll still hit a wall and have to beat a whole bunch of weak enemies before you can earn a lot of levels again. I'm not sure if this is the case, but from my experiences it seems to be true. 16. For some reason, 's Waza suddenly started taking massive amounts of WP! Certain items, if equipped, cause this to happen. Try removing some of your shields or armor. 17. What's all this stuff when I start the game? Well, first you get to pick which character you want to play as. From the top of the list, the males are: Julian Thomas Mikhail Harid The females are: Sarah Ellen Monica Katarina After you pick your character you can name him/her if you wish. When you're done, push start. You'll then get to a screen where you can select some other things. I'm not sure what they are, I just pushed 'A'. Finally you get to pick what type of weapon the character uses best. That character will learn Waza for that weapon much faster than for other weapons. The choices are: Sword type 1 Sword type 2 Axe Hammer Spear Short sword Bow Martial arts Nothing(if you pick this he/she will start with magic) Now you're set to begin the game! II. CHARACTERS JULIAN Sex: Male Occupation: ? Where to find: I played his scenario Speed: Medium Good weapon to give him: Swords Evaluation: Julian's a pretty good character. If you play his scenario he will be building up levels for the whole game and thus he will be a strong member. HARID Sex: Male Occupation: Mercenary? Where to find: You get him at the beginning of the game, later you can get him at the big mansion in Lance. Speed: Fast Good weapon to give him: Swords Kamsheen Swords (I have found only two different ones that fit this category) Evaluation: Harid rocks. Go to Lance as soon as you can so you can start building up levels for him. He can use sword attacks well just like everyone else, but his Kamsheen can use "Demi Rune" and later "Demi Rune Echo". You'll be stuck with a Kamsheen with an attack power of only 13 for a while, so also give him a Type 2 sword. His sword skill is high, so his "Smash" is very effective. Harid is also fast, so he will attack early in the round. Harid has a special battle formation "Desert Lance". If you play his scenario he is even better, as he can get the real Kamsheen(if you can beat the Black Dragon Ruler). This awesome weapon has attack power 41, and Demi Rune skills too. You can also get a great piece of armor early in the game in the tomb even if you can't beat the Dragon Ruler. Give Harid this armor, use "Desert Lance" and Harid will take almost all physical attacks for very little damage. ELLEN Sex: Female Occupation: ? Where to find: You get her at the beginning of the game, I don't think you can get her again later (at least not in Julian's scenario). She will join Harid, though. Speed: Fast Good weapon to give her: Axes, Hammers Evaluation: I'm not sure if you can get her in Julian's scenario except at the beginning, but I used her in Harid's scenario and by the time I got to Aunas she was weaker than all of my other characters. Maybe it's just that axes and clubs aren't as good as swords. SARAH Sex: Female Occupation: ? Where to find: You get her at the beginning of the game. Later you can get her at Thomas' house in Pidona. Speed: Fast Good weapon to give her: ? Evaluation: Sarah's a pretty weak character overall. I gave her spears just so she could use the "Rock ..." technique. I replaced her pretty early in the game. THOMAS Sex: Male Occupation: ? Where to find: You get him at the beginning of the game. Later you can get him during the Muse subquest(see Walkthrough 10. PIDONA). Speed: Medium Good weapon to give him: ? Evaluation: I didn't use him much, so I can't really say. THE BARD(His name is in kanji) Sex: Male Occupation: Bard(duh) Where to find: In the cave where Monica was kidnapped. If you dump him you can pick him up again at many of the bars around the world. Speed: ? Good weapon to give him: Hammers Evaluation: I used him for a while, until I got better characters. He's okay, but not great. He can sing songs, but I'm not sure what it does. MONICA Sex: Female Occupation: Princess Where to find: You'll get her after beating Garuda Wing. Speed: ? Good weapon to give her: ? Evaluation: Monica's more of a story character(at least in Julian's scenario) so she isn't with the party for a long time. ECLAIR(Tatyana?) Sex: Female Occupation: ? Where to find: In almost any town except Riburofu Speed: ? Good weapon to give her: ? Evaluation: Eclair really sucks. You can pick her up early in the game and she'll still be much weaker than all of your people. She can be really annoying because you can't dump her at a bar. You have to go to Riburofu to get her to leave. NORA Sex: Female Occupation: Weaponsmith Where to find: Weapon shop in Pidona Speed: Medium Good weapon to give her: Spears Evaluation: I used Nora throughout the game. She's a pretty versatile character because she's good at spears. Give her an Aamentomu spear once you can afford it. ROBIN Sex: Male Occupation: Superhero Where to find: Port of Yamasu Speed: Fast Good weapon to give him: Spears/short swords Evaluation: Robin's a pretty good character. He can use spears well so you can use him like Nora. He's also fast, which is useful. I used him all the way until I got Leonid. WOOD Sex: Male Occupation: ? Where to find: Yuusuterumu Speed: Slow Good weapon to give him: Swords Evaluation: Even though he's slow as a snail, Wood is a really good character. He starts with the skill "Smash" which you can use a couple times and quickly master(which means you can give it to your other characters). He has high sword skill, and will be useful throughout the game. YUKI DARUMA Sex: ? Occupation: Snowman Where to find: The snow town Speed: ? Good weapon to give it: ? Evaluation: I didn't really use him so I'm not sure. SHAARU Sex: Male Occupation: ? Where to find: Slums in Pidona Speed: Medium Good weapon to give him: Swords or spears Evaluation: Shaaru is okay. He starts with better levels than Mikhail starts with, and he has high Fire Magic skill. You'll probably have to build him up a bit if you want to use him, though. MUSE Sex: Female Occupation: ? Where to find: Slums in Pidona Speed: ? Good weapon to give her: ? Evaluation: I didn't use her, but she has only 6 LP, low HP, and zero weapon ability when you get her. MIKHAIL Sex: Male Occupation: King of Loanne Where to find: Loanne Speed: Medium Good weapon to give him: Swords or spears Evaluation: Mikhail's okay. He's decent in swords and spears, and starts with Sun Magic. The downside, though, is that you have to beat Aunas before you can get him to join your party, and by that time, his levels might already be outdated. UNDINE Sex: Female Occupation: Mage Where to find: North Moses Speed: ? Good weapon to giver her: ? Evaluation: Undine has zero weapon ability and high magic ability. I didn't really use magic so I didn't use Undine. But if you do use magic she might be good. BOSTON Sex: Male? Occupation: Lobster Where to find: Island of the Lobsters Speed: Medium Good weapon to give him/her: Fists Evaluation: Boston starts out with no weapon ability at all and only 440 HP, so he looks like an outdated character by the time you get him. But wait! He is level 24 in hand-to-hand combat and his lobster martial arts can do a lot of damage. YOUNG(2 kanji meaning "few" and "year") Sex: Male Occupation: ? Where to find: After you beat Forneus Speed: ? Good weapon to give him: ? Evaluation: I didn't use this person, so I'm not sure. He's the guy who survived from the last death eclipse, I think. HERMAN Sex: Male Occupation: Ex-pirate Where to find: Great Arch Speed: ? Good weapon to give him: ? Evaluation: I didn't use him, so I'm not sure. LEONID Sex: Male Occupation: Vampire Where to find: Castle north of Podorui Speed: Fast Good weapon to give him: Swords or spears Evaluation: In my opinion, Leonid is the best character in the game. He is resistant to most status ailments and "instant death" attacks. He is also resistant to almost all magic. He starts with 20 skill in swords, spears, and martial arts. Leonid is also the fastest character so he'll attack first almost every time. Because of this he makes a great Ice Sword user. He also has a unique type of undead magic, but I don't really use it. Finally, he has infinite LP. Whew! The only drawbacks are that if he dies in battle, you can't bring him back until the battle is over, and it's difficult to heal him because you can't use potions on him. But he doesn't die easily. TSUIRIN Sex: Female Occupation: ? Where to find: Mung Speed: ? Good weapon to give her: Bows Evaluation: I used her for one dungeon and then I got Nora back and dumped her. She was pretty outdated by the time I got to her. BAIMEINYAN Sex: Female Occupation: Tsuirin's teacher Where to find: Japanese castle east of Mung Speed: ? Good weapon to give her: ? Evaluation: I didn't use her because she starts with zero weapon ability. She has high magic ability, though, so if you use magic, she might be a good choice. ZOO Sex: Male Occupation: Elephant Where to find: Rashukuta Speed: ? Good weapon to give him: Fists Evaluation: Zoo's attack power is a bit outdated by the time you get him, so I didn't really use him. YOUSEI Sex: Female Occupation: Fairy Where to find: The fairy village Speed: ? Good weapon to give her: ? Evaluation: By the time I found the traveling fair she was already outdated, so I didn't use her much. People I've heard can join but I've never gotten them: Black, the commander of the friendly Japanese castle III. BATTLES Most of the battles you fight will be random battles. These enemies are generally moving. If you run into them they will almost certainly attack first. If you walk into them from the back, you will get to strike first. Also, if you're surprised you won't be able to fight in formation. The kinds of random enemies you meet depends on your levels. Therefore you can meet really wimpy random enemies right next to an impossible boss. Many enemies block your way and are not moving. These are often mini-bosses. Again, if you run into them they will attack first. In a battle, you can press left and right to select different attacks. If the pointer is on a weapon attack, the weapon will be listed on the top and the Waza that character has equipped for that weapon will be listed underneath it. There are no Phoenix Downs in the SaGa series, when a character's HP gets down to 0, use regular means(e.g., tonic) to heal them. Each time a character's HP goes down to 0 he'll lose 1 LP. While they're down the enemies can attack them, causing them to lose LP. If their LP goes down to zero you can't revive them until they get their LP back. The only ways to do that are sleeping at the inn and using certain LP-restoring items. At the end of each battle everyone's HP returns to maximum. The more you use a weapon, the better that character gets at using that type of weapon. Therefore, have each character only use one type of weapon. Remember, sword type 1 and sword type 2 are the same type in terms of how good a character is at using it, and so are axes/hammers, and short swords/spears. Therefore, it's good to have, for example, a character equipped with both a sword type 1 and a sword type 2. IV. WALKTHROUGH This walkthrough is for Julian's scenario, however, with the exception of the beginning of the game, I think most of the other scenarios follow pretty much the same path. 1. SINNON WOODS You start the game in a forest with Julian, Harid, Ellen, Sarah, and Thomas. Walk around fighting enemies just to get a feel for how the game works. At the end is a bird boss, "Garuda Wing." It shouldn't be too hard(hey, it's the first boss). If you're stuck be sure to use Harid's "Kasumi ..." After you beat Garuda Wing, you'll see a scene at Mikhail's castle where he thanks you for helping Monica. Harid leaves with Mikhail and you are asked to take Monica to Podorui. You'll be back in the woods. Go through the woods and at the end you will fight a tornado mini-boss. After this you can go to Podorui. 2. PODORUI Podorui is the first town you get to. If you push 'X' you can get to the world map(although you can't go anywhere yet). When you get to a new town always talk to all of the people(even if you don't understand a word they're saying :). If there's a bartender choose both the first and third options(right now there are only two, choose both). Many places won't show up on the map if you haven't talked to the right person yet. INN Numbers in parentheses are the attributes of the item WEAPON/ITEM SHOP Cost Axe(9) 85 Bow(7) 55 Armor(9, 4) 180 Shirt(4, 2) 70 Boots(4, 3) 80 Tonic 30 ? 200 ? 240 MOON MAGIC Moon Glow 400 Soul Freeze 800 Moon Shine 2000 Other exits: North: To Leonid's castle 3. LEONID'S CASTLE Exit Podorui to the north and climb the mountain up to Leonid's castle(If you're stuck you can go down the slopes but not up). Leonid will invite you in. Follow the ghost down the stairs into the door on the right side of Leonid. Do NOT go to the left side yet, unless you are hoping for an early death. Follow the ghosts down the stairs to your rooms, where you'll sleep. After you wake up Leonid will ask you to get something. This item is in the Podorui cave. 4. PODORUI CAVE Go back to Podorui and push 'X' to get to the world map. You'll see that a new area has shown up to the north of Podorui. Enter that area and go through the dungeon. The item "Shell Blazer"(?) that Leonid wants is in the room full of goblins. You'll have to beat an easy mini-boss(just a different type of goblin) to get it. Other treasures: Item that casts Ice x1 500 aurums x1 5. LEONID'S CASTLE Return to Leonid's castle with the item. He'll say something and you'll end up in Loanne(Mikhail's castle). 6. LOANNE You'll see a scene where Mikhail thanks you and a girl in pink will read off your names. After that, only Julian will be left and you'll get to walk around the castle. Don't talk to the girl in pink(Monica?) upstairs until you're done exploring. She will take you to the next area. 7. SAVING MONICA When you're ready, talk to the girl in pink and you'll be alone with Monica. She will be kidnapped and you'll go to a cave. Early in this cave you will meet a bard. Choose the first option and he'll join you. You can meet a guy named Godwin in this cave in the room where you fight a fireball. I'm not sure what he's for. Monica is in the room right behind where you found the bard. Exit and you'll return to Loanne. 8. LOANNE / ATTACKED SHIP Again, don't talk to the girl in pink upstairs, because she will send you out to Myurusu. Talk to Mikhail instead and you'll get on a ship. Go upstairs and talk to Monica. When you return downstairs the ship will be attacked. Go back upstairs to Monica and she'll join you. Then go downstairs and get two treasure chests before going upstairs to the deck. There you'll fight five "Heputopasu" (Heptopus). They're not that strong but since you only have Julian and Monica, make sure you save before you go to the top floor. After you beat them you'll jump off the ship and wash up on the shore of Tsuwaiku. Monica is gone. Treasures: 100 aurums x1 200 aurums x1 Now it's time to go exploring. I think the town you end up in might not always be the same, though. If you don't end up in Tsuwaiku, that's okay, you can always go to Pidona from the port and from there you can pretty much get to any other town(though you have to pay a fee). 9. TSUWAIKU For some reason everyone seems to call this city "Shibaik" even though the katakana is clearly "tsu". You can meet Eclair here. She's the girl who's walking around quickly. Keep talking to her and she'll join you. Pick up a Tsuwai sword at the weapon shop, it's strong and later you'll be able to learn the skill "Smash" which is useful throughout the game, and a skill that has an effect that looks like Blade Beam in Final Fantasy 7(sticks sword into ground, waves of energy shoot out). You probably can't afford the Aamentomu spear yet, but spears are another good choice for weapons because you can get a skill that takes no WP(kanji, "Rock" being the first word, which looks like ---- / /-- | | | | -- ) and does above average damage, a skill "Mijuchi" that does a lot of damage and is very useful against bosses, and an awesome attack that is three kanji words, the first one being the word for "big", which looks like | ----------- / \ / \ / \ / \). There's a fighting tournament here, but it will be a while before you're strong enough to win it. If you've talked to everyone you should be able to go to the town Kidolant or go to the port and go to either Myurusu or Pidona. Go to Thomas' house(It's the one where an old man runs up to you right when you enter) and you can get Sara in your party. You can also talk to Thomas, but he won't join you. Instead, you see him running south when you leave his house. Go to the weapon shop on the west side of town and go down to the basement. You'll see a scene and Nora will join your party if you select the first option. Later when you talk to certain people, they will return here and make equipment for you. In the northwest corner of town there is a house with some guys shrouded in capes(Sephiroth's minions?) This is the "Cult of Maximus." Nothing happens here yet, so don't worry about it. You can get the bard again if you go to the house in the northeast corner. Also, in the upstairs of that house is one of the people that will go to the weapon shop and make equipment for you. In the slums(enter from southwest part of Pidona, you'll see Thomas running there if you exit the weapon shop in the south part of town), you can see Muse. Thomas will join you here, and you'll be taken to a dungeon. Go down the left stairs, and then go into the left door at the bottom of the large central staircase that is straight up and down in that room. Go through that room(run to jump over the pit) and you'll find a boy. Talk to him, exit the dungeon, and go back to the house in the slums. That's about all you can do at this point. Since she really sucks, this can be very annoying.) Then go talk to the guy in red. He's Wood, one of the best characters in the game(If you have six, all he says is "yo"). He has the "Smash" skill and if you use it a few times, you'll master it and everyone can equip it(after the battle, it will say). Useful skill for everyone using Tsuwai swords. Choose the first option both times and you'll go to a frozen lake. FROZEN LAKE I recommend trying to save your WP through this dungeon because you might not be able to beat the boss at your current level. When you get to a place that seems to be a dead end, but there are small islands in the water in front of you, jump(by running) on to the island. You'll meet a fish boss. Use Wood's "Smash" to beat it. If your party's too weak, you might have to gain some levels before you fight it(save your WP). 14. LANCE Go talk to Anna in one of the houses(she's the one who's alone in a house with up and down stairs). You can see Ellen, but she won't join you. Harid, however, will join you if you don't have six party members already. You can find him at the big mansion on the west side of town. For some reason, when I got Harid he didn't have a sword. You can get one that works as his Kamsheen in the weapon shop in Myurusu (it's the first on the list). Talk to the guy at the weapon shop and he'll send you on a side quest. All you do is run through a big field of thieves. When you finish the quest you get 1000 aurums, plus you'll end up in Yamasu, which means you don't have to pay the ferry in Pidona to go there :). You can do this again for 2000 aurums, and you'll end up in Faris. Now go out of the port and into the house closest to the port. Choose the first option and you'll see some guys try to kidnap a child. Robin will beat them up, then leave. Go to the weapon shop(the big one, not the one close to the town exit). When you come out, some bad guys will attack a townsperson. A pudgy Robin comes out and fights them, but ends up falling into a barrel and gets captured. Then the real Robin appears and you'll help him fight. After you beat the enemies, if you go back to the building in the port, choose the first option and Robin will join you, assuming you don't already have six characters (NOTE: For some reason the bard wouldn't leave, I just dumped someone else instead. There's nothing to do at Rubu Mountain yet, but it's good to make it appear. 23. NORTH MOSES Moses is the double town on the same screen as Vanguard and Wilmington, south of Vanguard. The north and south parts connect by a bridge. You can go from one to the other without going to the world map. If you go into the big building in the southwest part of North Moses, a bunch of mages will attack you. Beat them up and a lady will come down and say a bunch of stuff and ask you something(I'm not sure what, I just said "hai"). Now you can go buy Sun Magic if you want, or go up the stairs. Upstairs is a weird room with a whole bunch of teleporting tiles. Play around with them until you get to the bottom center part and you can get two treasures: Gem(0, 13) Armor(14, 18) Now play around with them until you get to an upward staircase. Go up it and you can talk to the woman(Undine). Later if you talk to her she might fight you(Reset the game if she attacks you, because you don't want to kill her, she'll join you later in the game). Talk to the guy blocking the bridge in the south part of town. He will move aside and you can talk to the two people blocking the well. Note that this building is a loop, if you go to the top and then go upstairs, you'll end up at the bottom, and vice versa. Go talk to the man(Volga) at the top and if you choose the first option, he'll fight you. Again, you don't want to kill him, so don't do this. Now talk to the person in the north part of town blocking the way to the bridge. He'll move aside and you can go to the well. Talk to the people blocking the well and they'll leave. If you go up to the well and push 'A' you'll jump inside. The boss in the well is too strong now, though, so I'll come back to this later. You can pick up a Bloody Sword just by going left, though(It's cursed, by the way). Leave and go to the cave right next to Kidolant. If it's not there, talk to the old man in the northeast house in Kidolant and you'll be taken there. Once you get in someone will lock you inside. Make your way to a room with a lot of exits. One of those will lead to treasure(push 'A' on some of the skeletons lying on the ground), one will be nothing, and the west one continues on. Keep going until you get to a room where the music stops playing. Walk up into the black area and a bunch of rats will attack. It's impossible to beat them now, so run(push 'R', then 'A'). Go back to the entrance of the cave and Nina will let you out. Now return to the professor and you'll find out that the leader of the rats is an intelligent rat "Algernon" who escaped from her lab. Algernon's pack of rats has been demanding human sacrifices from the people of Kidolant. The old man shut your party in in the hopes that you would be the next to go. The professor will give you the "Rodent Nix". Now return to Kidolant and talk to the old man in the northeast house again. You'll find out that he's going to sacrifice Nina to the rats. Now go back to the cave. You'll see that a large boulder has been put up to seal Nina inside. Push 'A' and you'll move it aside. Now if you go back to the rats, the boss music will play and you can beat them. If you got the Rodent Nix all of the rats except Algernon will be damaged every round. Attack the rat that does not take damage(Algernon) and eventually you'll beat them. Each time you hit Algernon the screen will flash. If you don't have the Rodent Nix they will be almost impossible, as you'll only have a small chance of hitting the right rat. Treasures: Item that casts Ice x1 Hammer(15) x1 Algernon's approx. HP: 2308 32. JUNGLE OF AKE Supposedly somewhere there is a traveling fair and you can find a fairy to help you get to the Fire Abyss Gate, but I've never found it, and believe me, I've looked. So all you can do is wander around in the jungle (exit Ake to the south) and hope that you reach the palace. Stock up on some High Tonics before heading to the Fire Abyss Gate, you'll need them. There's a fairy village in the jungle(you have to climb up a vine to get there) if you can find it. You have to wander around for a long time to get there, though, and there really isn't anything you need there, so if you don't find it, that's ok. When you get to the start of the village, run(don't walk) to your left to jump to the tree. There are a few treasures: ? x1 If you're wandering in a town and you see a sign that's not normally there, you've found the traveling fair. Go off the screen near the sign, and you'll reach the fair. Go to all of the tents. In the topmost tent is a fairy. Now if you sleep at the inn in that town, then you will be given the opportunity to save the fairy. Go back to the topmost tent and push 'A' on the right side of the cage. It will open and the fairy will fly away. If you go back to the fairy town she is in the top house, and she will join you. I've also heard she can tell you which color of butterfly to follow to get to the Fire Palace. Tip 1: You can go across some parts of the river where there are stepping stones. Tip 2: Try to go through exits with butterflies. It's okay to go back into the exit you just came out of, you'll go to a random place(sort of like the Lost Woods in the original Zelda) Tip 3: If you do get to the fairy village, you'll start on a platform. Run(not walk) to the left and you will jump to the door. Tip 4: After you've already gone inside the palace once, if you exit, it will appear on the map and you won't have to wander around in the jungle again. The same goes for the fairy village. 33. FIRE PALACE Is it just me, or does this dungeon sort of look like the Ocean Palace in Chrono Trigger? The enemies in this dungeon are much harder than the ones you've met before. I learned a whole bunch of skills here and leveled up really fast. You'll need the levels to beat the boss Aunas. Build up spear users because they have a couple of useful skills to use against the boss Aunas. If you already have the spear skill that starts with the word "big" in kanji(see 9. TSUWAIKU) you can earn money and levels very fast. Right when you go out the top door in the first room, you'll see a goblin standing by the wall with his back turned. Approach it and it will attack. It will always be five little mages. Just use that spear skill and it should be a snap. Then go back to the first room, come back, and you can beat the goblin again. You'll get 113 aurums each time you do this. One of the treasure chests is guarded by a mini-boss 'Kerberos'. You can beat it with "Smash" and the spear skill mentioned above, or "Mijuchi". The treasure is only a 12 Attack power short sword, though. There is another mini-boss that you have to beat in this dungeon. It's three creatures standing around a portal. What's really annoying about this battle is that there are two enemies blocking you from attacking it, and after each round, if you kill one, they will summon another to replace it. Even worse, they regenerate HP every round. If you have the spear skill mentioned above it should be a cinch, but if not, use "Smash" to quickly eliminate the front ones and then you can attack the creatures. Many magics can also target the back, but I hardly ever use magic so I usually don't have anyone strong enough at magic to be able to do a lot of damage. There's a chest with no treasure in it, but instructions on where to find a secret attack "Crimson Flare". I've never gotten it, though, so I'm not sure what it's like. Right before you get to Aunas, you'll meet another mini-boss, the Pyro Hydra. It's pretty strong, but if you're having a hard time beating it, you aren't strong enough to beat Aunas yet. Just use your strongest attacks("Smash", "Mijuchi", etc.). After you beat the Pyro Hydra you'll get Pidora Armor(20, 10). Also, if you leave and come back, you won't have to beat it again(unlike the other mini-bosses). As if that weren't enough, you have to fight the real boss of this dungeon, the Fire Abyss Gate Guardian, Aunas. Although they are all tough, If you don't know the way, Aunas is one of the hardest guardians because he has a fire barrier around him so if you attack with normal weapons you will receive massive damage in return. Spear attacks "Mijuchi" and the one that starts with the kanji "big" are ranged so you can use these safely. Also there's one sword attack that is three kanji characters and starts with /------- | | ------- / \ / \ that is safe to use. If you've learned "Back Stab" you can use that safely as well. If you have it, the skill that looks like Blade Beam from FF7(see 9. TSUWAIKU) is safe too. The trick, though, is to use the spell "Self-Burning"(fire magic, you can buy it in Ake) on yourself. Each character should use this in the first round because it makes him/her invulnerable to fire attacks. After you use "Self-Burning" you can attack Aunas with anything you like. Also, it is a good idea to spread your characters out so that only some of them will take damage when Aunas uses his fire wall attack. If you have Harid you can use "Desert Lance", put Harid in front, and use "Self-Burning" on him. He'll be the only one who takes the hits from the fire walls, and since he has "Self-Burning", he will take zero damage. One word of warning: if you get attacked with a physical attack, you will lose your "Self-Burning" and that character will have to use it again. Aunas has about 19000 HP. Treasures: Fire Armor(12, 12) x1 3000 aurums(Wow!) x1 Nightingale(short sword, 12) x1 (Behind Kerberos) Armor(15, 25) x1 ? x1 500 aurums x2 34. AURORA PATH Go to Lance and ask Anna to tell you about "Aurora". Then go to the map screen and push 'X'. You'll see the whole world map and fireworks will periodically flash in the background. Wait a LONG time and eventually stars will appear. When you see weird clouds on the top part of the screen, push 'A'. There will be a new area you can go to. If it doesn't show up try getting rid of one of your characters if you have six already. You'll go through a portal(like the time gates in Chrono Trigger) and end up in a snow town. 35. THE SNOW TOWN Keep talking to the snowman "Yuki Daruma" in the basement of the middle house and he'll join you. Also, all the rest of the snowmen awaken and you can talk to them! There's even a pub in this town(You can't dump a character here, though). Talk to everyone and then go into the door in the room where you can rest(it was locked before you talked to the snowman). Exit the cave and then exit the town to the right side and you'll reach a frozen lake. REST ITEM SHOP Cost ? 500 Wine of the Gods 980 36. FROZEN LAKE Jump from island to island by running(not walking). The Cyclops that inhabit this area are tough to beat, so avoid them whenever possible(They're good for earning, though). Along the way you'll meet a mini-boss "Windflower". By now it should be a piece of cake. Push 'A' on the statue and you'll get an item. Keep going and you'll fight a grey Dragon Ruler. This beast can do hundreds of damage to all of your characters in a single round. All you can do is hope that it uses attacks that only affect one character rather than the whole party. If you can't beat it yet, you can come back later in the game to get the Ice Sword after you're stronger. The Ice Sword is an awesome weapon. It does much more damage than a Tsuwai Sword with its regular attack. The only drawback is that it gives you an ice barrier so that if enemies attack you, they'll get damaged a little bit. Why is this bad? Well, if you haven't attacked yet this round, you lose youir turn. The solution is to give the sword to a fast party member(e.g, Harid, Leonid, Robin). Treasures: ? x1 (after Windflower) Ice Sword(40) x1 (after Grey Dragon Ruler) 37. LANCE Go into the big building that Ellen is pacing around near. Talk to the guy upstairs and choose all of the options. Now go to the big mansion and talk to everyone. Some of the women should move after you talk to them. Now go to the dungeon on the west side of Pidona(Arakes' dungeon) and make your way to a door that you can't get through(it's behind a throne). After this, go back to the guy in Lance and he should give you the Royal Ring. (Note: the first time I played it through, one of the people in the mansion gave me the ring. You'll know you got it when you hear a beep.) If you don't get the ring, try shuttling between the women in the mansion and the guy in Lance, or going to the locked door in Arakes' dungeon. Remember that you won't get it if you haven't beaten Aunas(Fire Abyss Gate Guardian) and gone to the locked door in Arakes' dungeon. The Royal Ring(0, 5) starts with the kanji for "king" ----------- | | ----------- | | ----------- and is worth 2500 aurums at a shop. You'll soon see the usefulness of this. 38. GET RICH QUICK If you've ever played any SaGa game, you know that money is hard to come by. Well, now that you have the Royal Ring, this is not an issue any more! Go to the bottom weapon shop in Yamasu(the big one in the town square where Eclair is prancing around), and sell your Royal Ring. Exit the shop and return again. The shopkeeper will say "We've got a great item today!" and you'll notice a "beautiful ring" you can buy for 10 aurums. Buy it, and when you look at your item list, your Royal Ring is back! You can keep selling it for 2500 aurums and buying it back for 10 as many times as you want. Now's the time to buy all those expensive weapons you couldn't afford, or stock up on potions. Note that your maximum cash is 10000 aurums. You can always buy what you need and come back to earn more money later. 39. PIDONA If you go back to Muse's house you'll see that she is in terrible condition. Talk to the guy(Shaaru) sitting at the table twice. He'll give Muse some kind of potion and Muse will be healed. If you talk to him again he'll join you. Also if you leave the building and return, Muse will join you. After all of the levels you had to earn to beat Aunas, though, these characters might be a bit outdated. At least Muse has a "Guard Ring" which you can give to another character. 40. THE EARTH ABYSS GATE You may have made so much money with the Royal Ring that you have forgotten that it's actually an event item. Remember that dungeon in Pidona where you visited on the Muse subquest? If you went down to the end of the dungeon there was a door that you couldn't open. Now that you have the Royal Ring, you can open it and reach the Earth Abyss Gate. There's a secret passage that allows you to skip most of this dungeon. In the first room after you see the big building and hear the abyss gate music play, jump over a hole in the ground(by running) and down into the wall. You will find a portal that takes you almost to the place where you need the Royal Ring. (Note: this only works if you've gone through it once and beaten the guardian on the other side of the portal.) The quickest way to Arakes is to run into the big red blob floating in the middle of the first multi-exit room, and then go to the top exit. You can get a lot of cool treasures if you explore, though, most of which I probably missed. The most difficult thing about Arakes is the fact that he can confuse all of your characters. When this happens they often will attack your party members or not even attack at all. If you've been gaining levels and have learned good techniques, you should be able to do massive damage to him every round. He doesn't have the fire barrier around him like Aunas, so just use your strongest attacks. Watch out, though, as he uses Sleep, Confuse, and other annoying status ailments against you. Keep attacking and hope you don't get all of your party members confused and you should be able to beat him. A clue that someone's about to attack your allies is if you don't get to choose which enemy to attack(normally on most attacks you have to push 'A' twice to register your choice). In that case, just parry by pushing 'L' and then 'A'. Upper bound on Arakes' HP: 24793 41. FOREST WEST OF TSUWAIKU If you've talked to the professor enough times, whenever you go to Tsuwaiku you'll get run over by a bike. Go back to the forest and you'll get run over again. Return to the professor's house and go down to the basement. Choose the first option and then go into the only door you can go into. You'll fight a large bike. By now it should be a piece of cake. After you beat it it will fall off a cliff and explode, and you'll end up in Tsuwaiku. 42. LOANNE Go to the bar in Vanguard and choose the first option. Go through the dungeon and you'll eventually reach a dragon "Guwein". Don't choose the first option because then he will attack you. Choose the second option instead, and he'll fly you up to Byunei. The advantages of this method are that it's easy to get up to Byunei(all the enemies in the dungeon are regular random enemies) and Guwein takes most of the damage for you. The disadvantage is that you must fight with only Julian(and Guwein). A good attack for Guwein is the bottom one that takes 10 WP. Don't use the second one because it does no damage to Byunei. If you choose this way Byunei will be the easiest of the four abyss gate guardians. 43b. THE HARD WAY(TAFUTAN MOUNTAIN) On the same screen of the world map as Myurusu and Loanne is a tiny patch of mountain in the southeast corner. Move the pointer to "Tafutan Mountain" and you should be able to go there. You'll start by climbing up the outside of the mountain. Jump from ledge to ledge as you climb up. There are two points where you can get stuck if you don't know that if you push 'A' a rope will appear. They are at the ends of the second and third screens. When you exit the third screen you will be given a choice. Don't choose the first one because you'll leave the mountain. Choose the second choice and you'll be in the clouds. Go straight up to get to a darker part of the mountain. If you leave through the door you came from you'll go out of the mountain. After you've been here once, whenever you go to Tafutan Mountain you will be given a choice. Choose the first option and you'll go right to that section. In the dungeon there are a lot of "Life Traps". You can avoid most of them but you will have to fight some of them. These can be annoying because they have extremely high defense power and may force you to use a lot of WP to take care of them. They have about 4000 HP. All of the treasures in this dungeon are obtained by pushing 'A' on skeletons. Instructions for how to get the combination "Galaxy" are located in one of them. Before you get to Byunei you will have to beat a mini-boss of three enemies: "Byunei Bird", "Byunei Dog", and "Byunei Baby". They can be pretty hard, and will suck more WP from your pool. If you play through this way Byunei will be much harder, even though you get to have all of your characters. Use your strongest attacks and hope that Byunei doesn't confuse, sleep, or paralyze all of your fighters. If you've already gotten Leonid, he's great for this boss because he has resistance to most of Byunei's attacks. Upper bound on HP: 28893 Treasures: Armor(12, 15) x1 ? x1 Item that casts a spell x1 ? x2 Shirt(9, 5) x1 ? x1 Armor(20, 20) x1 (after beating the mini-boss) 44. MOSES WELL You can pick up a shield at the bottom of the well in Moses. It's located on the bridge between North and South Moses. Note: you can go left and right from the room you start in. To leave the well, go to the top of the room you start in, press 'A', and choose the first option. To get to the shield you have to find a secret passageway. There's a place with two exits very close to each other, the top one leading to a room with two skeletons and nothing else, and the bottom one leading to a room with two treasure chests. Check the left wall between these two exits to find the hidden passageway. You'll fight a mini-boss: two gargoyles, two ghosts, and a "Death Master". It should be a piece of cake. When you beat it, you'll get the shield. One warning: if you equip this shield, all of your techniques will take more WP to use. When I came out of the well, the two people from weird buildings in North and South Moses(see 23. NORTH MOSES and 24. SOUTH MOSES) attacked me. In a previous game I had already killed them when I went up to their buildings and they attacked, so this didn't happen. Anyway, I'm not sure when this event will be triggered or what it means. The bosses' names are Undine and Volga. By now they should be easy to beat. Now if you go to Volga's building(S. Moses), you can loot some menial treasures(mages used to be blocking them). For some reason both of them will sell you magic. Treasures: Bloody Sword x1 ? x1 300 aurums x1 Item that casts Ice x1 In Volga's building: Fire Armor(12, 12) x1 Guard Ring(8, 8) x1 45. UNDERGROUND VANGUARD Go to the secret staircase the old man in Vanguard opened up for you(see 21. VANGUARD). Make your way to the end of the dungeon, beat the iceballs, and push 'A' on the red switch. A staircase should open up. Go into the control room and walk up to the control panel in the middle of the room. The room will light up and the RS3 theme will play. Go back out and talk to the old man. He'll tell you that you need a dolphin statue for the machines to work. Talk to the barkeeper in Vanguard, then go to Great Arch. Treasures: 600 aurums x1 Helmet(9, 3) x1 Gem(3, 3) x1 ? x1 ? x1 46. CAVE OF THE DOLPHIN STATUE In Great Arch, talk to the guy standing on the pier who looks different than everyone else. He's Herman, and he'll show you to a cave where the dolphin statue is. In the cave there are a lot of places where you have to walk through secret passages in the walls. It's usually pretty obvious where they are, though. Just look at the patterns on the ground. Sometimes you have to hit skull switches in the walls before you go into doors, otherwise they will close. If it does, go out of the room, come back, and hit the skull switch(press 'A'). If you get to a door which gives you two options, DON'T CHOOSE THE FIRST OPTION because you'll leave the cave. The dolphin statue is closest to that exit door. You'll have to beat a mini-boss to get it. Push 'A' on the statue and you'll fight the mini-boss. These enemies are really outdated by now, so they'll be easy. After you beat them, push 'A' on the statue again and you'll get it("Iruka..."). Don't equip it or you might not be able to trigger future events. It's not very good as armor anyway. Now you can leave the dungeon by way of the door. Treasures: ? x1 50 aurums and enemies appear x3 ? x1 200 aurums x1 Enemies appear x1 Hammer(16) x1 1000 aurums x2 Spike shield(18, 35) x1 Axe(17) x1 Dolphin statue(0, 1) x1 47. VANGUARD, THE FLOATING CITY Bring the dolphin statue back to Vanguard and return to the control room. Put the dolphin statue on the uppermost orange orb by pushing 'A'. Go back outside and talk to the old man. He'll tell you that you need mages. Go to North Moses and talk to Undine. If you have less than six in your party she'll join you. Undine is actually not outdated by the time you get her. However, she has zero weapon skill and high magic skill, so you'll have to use a lot of JP if you use her. (The first time I played through the game I killed Undine and Volga, so I got the mages from a mage at the inn. This mystery mage was not there when I went through the game without killing Undine and Volga). Now go back to Vanguard, talk to the old man, and go down to the control room. Walk up to the control panel, and the city of Vanguard will break off from the mainland and become a floating island! If you get stuck on Vanguard, the way to get off is to go down to the place where the Pidona ferry used to be(downstairs of one of the houses). When you go up to the control panel you will see coordinates. Choose the first option to go to that place. You should be able to go to "H Plus" 20 "L Minus" 40, whatever that means. If not, go to whatever place you go to and when you go back to the control panel again the coordinates should change. You should end up at an island full of lobsters. 48. ISLAND OF THE LOBSTERS Talk to all of the lobsters and one will give you coordinates "H Plus Minus" 0 "L Minus" 100. One of the lobsters "Boston" will join you if you have less than six. There is a dungeon entrance in the northwest corner of the town. 49. UNDERNEATH ISLAND OF THE LOBSTERS Go through the dungeon(you can run through the waterfall). When you get to what is seemingly a dead end, there's a secret door (walk behind the waterfall 'curtain' and go north). One of the enemies lurking around in this dungeon is a purple water dragon. You don't have to fight it, it is extremely strong. But you CAN run from it, and because of this you can use it to learn Waza. Fight it, and after you learn a technique, run. Because it's much stronger than you, you'll learn Waza fast. If you want to try and beat it, remember that it's weak to the sword attack that starts with ----------- | ----|---- | | | --------- | ----------- and ends with "ri". If you don't miss, you can do over 5000 damage! You'll need it because the beast has over 25000 HP. Treasures: Hammer(16) x1 Spike Shield(18, 35) x1 Gem(3, 3) x1 ? x1 50. UNDERWATER CAVE Go back to the control room in Vanguard and choose the second option. Then choose the last option and Vanguard will go into "Submarine Mode"!(It is not known how the people above ground avoid drowning, but if you surface, they seem to be okay :) Choose the first option three times and you'll arrive at an underwater cave. Go through this cave and you'll arrive at an underwater palace. 51. UNDERWATER PALACE There's a chest with no treasure in it, but instructions on where to find a secret attack "Tempest". I've never gotten it, though, so I'm not sure what it's like. When you get to the abyss gate you'll find that Sarah and Young are trapped there. Forneus is extremely tough to beat. Like all abyss gate guardians, he can attack twice each round. He has powerful attacks that can hit all party members. Compounding the problem is that after he uses "Squall" once he will gain 999 HP every round. You might have to earn quite a bit before you can beat this boss. After you do Sarah will save Young but in doing so gets sucked into the Abyss Gate. Young will join your party if you have less than six. You can also get Herman to join your party if you go to Great Arch and talk to him. Actually, I've heard that if you beat Forneus with him in your party, he will turn into "Black" and get stronger. I've never done it, though. Beware, it's very hard to get Herman to leave your party. Upper bound on Forneus' HP: 28092 Treasures: 1000 aurums x3 ? x2 Gem(2, 6) x2 Armor(30, 10) x1 52. THE TOURNAMENT By now, you should have a shot at winning the tournament in Tsuwaiku. Talk to the two people guarding the door at the north end. Choose the first option and you'll enter a tournament. First, you'll see the bracket. Push 'A' and you'll get to a screen where you can change your lineup. If you want to do so, push 'A' and change them. Otherwise press 'B' and the tournament will begin! Your characters will fight one at a time, a la Battle Arena in FF7, and if one of them is defeated, the next one fights, until all your characters are defeated or you defeat all six enemies. If you have the Ice Sword equipped you might want to remove it because if the enemy uses physical attacks, you could lose your turn almost every round. If you win you'll move on to the next round to fight a different set of monsters. If you win 5 matches you'll get 10000 aurums and a Gold Medal(4, 4). Not that useful with the Royal Ring trick, but rewarding to win. Also, if your main character doesn't go to Podorui early in their story, you need to win the tournament to get access to Leonid's castle. You can actually do this any time in the game, but if you meet Dragons you might not be able to beat them. Incomplete list of opponents: Goblins Difficulty: Easy Dragons Difficulty: Hard Sea monsters Difficulty: Easy Dancers and mermaids Difficulty: Medium Knights Difficulty: Medium Demons Difficulty: Medium Wisps Difficulty: Easy 53. LEONID'S CASTLE Remember the left door you didn't go into in Leonid's Castle at the beginning of the game? Well, if you beat that dungeon at any point Leonid will join you. No problem, right? Well, you have to go through a long and arduous dungeon and beat 4 mini-bosses, the last of which is extremely tough. Late in the game, though, you should be able to do it. Make sure you don't have six characters and head on up to Leonid's Castle. Talk to him and he'll disappear and say HaHaHa.... Go into the left door and make your way through the dungeon. You'll have to fight a number of mini-bosses along the way. Mini-boss #1: 5 Waabatto. These are enemies from the beginning of the game. Don't waste your WP. Mini-boss #2: 3 Dragon Zombies. Stronger than the first mini-bosses, but still easy. The back one has about 3800 HP while the other two have less than 2000 HP. Mini-boss #3: Mootaru Ghost. If you're having problems on this you probably aren't strong enough to finish this dungeon yet. Beware, he regenerates about 400 HP each round. Upper bound on HP: 5045 Mini-boss #4: Three wolf-type creatures. You don't have to beat them to get to Leonid, all you get is a Bloody Sword. They're not easy to beat. Mini-boss #5: Gelatina Smarta. Much easier than the wolf-type creatures. He'll regenerate about 200 HP per round. Upper bound on HP: 3469 Mini-boss #6: Yamii. You were thinking, OK, no sweat, I beat the other mini-bosses, just one more to go, right? This monster can attack twice and regenerate 999 HP every round. If you had trouble beating the other mini-bosses you won't be able to beat this one. Upper bound on HP: 14608 After beating Yamii, be sure to go up the stairs to the left side and through a crack in the wall to get an awesome piece of armor(42, 42). You will have to beat five mermaids to get it, but they're easy. Now go down the stairs to get to Leonid. After you talk to him you will be back at the beginning of the castle. Talk to him again and he'll join you. Congratulations! You've finally completed this long dungeon. Leonid's a great addition to your party. He has infinite LP, and is resistant to a whole bunch of status ailments and "instant death" attacks, and almost all magic. He also has very high speed, meaning he will almost always attack first. Finally, he always has Regen. Leonid's a great person to give the Ice Sword to because he's fast, so he won't lose a turn if he gets attacked. The only drawbacks are that if he's killed in battle, you can't revive him until the next battle, and that he gains HP extremely slowly. One strange sidenote: If all of your characters have much more HP than Leonid, it seems that almost every battle the only thing you gain is HP Up for Leonid. Since he can only gain 1 HP each time, this can cause you to waste a lot of time earning! Try earning with enemies that you can beat in 1 turn, or removing Leonid from your main battle party temporarily while you earn for the others. Treasures: 400 aurums x1 200 aurums x1 ? x1 Guard Ring(8, 8) x1 600 aurums x1 Gem(2, 10) x1 ? x1 ? x1 ? x1 Rune Hammer(13) x1 54. CAVE NORTHWEST OF STANLEY Talk to everyone in Stanley and you should be able to go to a cave northwest of there. At the end of the cave is a boss, three Reapers. By now they should be easy to beat. After you finish this cave a new cave will appear between Stanley and Faris. Treasures: 500 aurums x2 2000 aurums x1 55. CAVE BETWEEN STANLEY AND FARIS When you get to the end there will be a bunch of weird looking devices with skeletons around it. You will be given a choice, pick the first option and you'll be booted out. Now go to Arakes' dungeon(in Pidona). Take the portal in the first room, and exit the room you come out of to the north. Go west and enter the door. There should be a treasure chest in that room. Open it and you'll read a poem. Return to the weird looking device and choose the second option. You'll fight a boss "Galateia". Beat it and you'll get an item "Kakera of the Dead". I'm not sure what it does, though. Treasures: Max Tonic x1 ? x1 300 aurums x1 56. THE CULT OF MAXIMUS Sometime later in the game if you go to the northwest house in Pidona(the one with all the guys in capes) you'll see a scene where Maximus is preaching. Note: it was hard for me to trigger this event, I think you might have to bring Herman. A couple of demons will appear and Maximus will be gone. Walk into the back of the altar and you'll find a secret stairway. In the dungeon there will be a lot of the guys in capes. If you approach them they will turn into monsters. In one of the rooms there is a mirror, push 'A' and it will open up, allowing you to reach a treasure chest. At the end of the dungeon, there is a boss "Benevolent King", along with an Oannesu and a Medusa. He's really easy, as he has less than 5000 HP. Beat him and exit the dungeon. You'll be in the slums of Pidona. Treasures: ? x1 Chokki Nuts(8, 12) x1 Med. Tonic x1 ? x1 800 aurums x1 2000 aurums x1 Gem(0, 13) x1 Armor(18, 21) x1 After you go to the desert you won't be able to get back to the overworld for a while, so stock up on potions, weapons, armor, etc. 57. THE DESERT Now that you've closed the four Abyss Gates, go to the entrance of the desert(move the cursor over the desert on the same screen as Riburofu). If you can't go there, talk to everyone in Riburofu. Run left for a few screens and you'll reach a town "Divine King's Abode". There are a whole bunch of weird guys in capes like you saw in Pidona. I'm not sure what you can do here. Now go right a few screens and you should arrive at a river. Make your way to the bottom of the river, fall down the last waterfall, and you'll reach a rocky area.(Hint: if you're stuck right at the beginning, you can climb down the slope where there's a plant-type enemy standing. Watch for rockholds you can climb up and down.) After you find your way through that you will hear the town music play in a field with enemies. Explore this field and you should find a town. 58. MUNG Talk to the person in the southeast tent and Tsuirin will join you. One of your characters will leave your party here(Don't worry, you'll get him/her back later) and stay with Tsuirin's teacher, Baimeinyan. Talk to everyone, leave town, and go south through the field. You'll get to a cave. There are two enemies in this cave that are not moving. Find them and destroy them and all of the enemies will vanish. Then go back and talk to the friendly creature that's not moving. He will say something about the Abyss Gates. Exit and return to Mung. Go back to the house where you got Tsuirin; she'll leave and you'll get your character back. If you want Tsuirin leave the house and return, choose the first option and she'll join you. 60. JAPANESE CASTLE Exit Mung to the east(you couldn't do this before) and you'll end up at a Japanese feudal style castle. Walk up to the door and Baimeinyan will arrive. There will be a short conversation and you'll be free to explore the place. You can get Baimeinyan to join you here. Most of these teleport you to other locations within the room. Explore the dungeon and search for the mini-boss. When you get to the room with the mini-boss, don't attack him first. Leave the room and keep going so you can get three treasure chests. Mini-boss : A blue headless knight Each round a couple of enemies will be summoned. They have a lot of HP so you will need to use attacks that can hit the mini-boss in the back. Try to get as much damage in the first round as possible. If you have a party based on swords like mine it might be a tough fight. Treasures: Item that casts Ice x1 300 aurums x1 Eruda Bow(22) x1 500 aurums x1 ? x1 Sword(27) x1 2000 aurums x1 After you beat this boss you'll wind up in the Japanese castle. You'll also be able to get back to the world map(finally!) by pushing 'X'. You'll find that it has expanded to fit all the new places you've been to. Go talk to Baimeinyan again(she's in the top building of the Japanese castle). You'll see a scene and you'll be able to go to the last dungeon. But wait! There's more to do first. 62. RASHUKUTA Return to Mung and talk to everyone there. Then go one screen west of Mung on the map to find Rashukuta. This town is populated by elephants. Talk to all of the elephants, and choose the first and third options at the bar, and you should be able to go to the Sunken Ruins. If you bring Young to the sick elephant in the northwest house, you can make him better. Now if you talk to the blue elephant "Zoo" in the house he will join you. There's a super shield (Uiru Guard) in this dungeon, but you have to beat a green Dragon Ruler to get it. How hard is it? Well, it will sometimes do an attack that does about 500 damage to all party members. This almost kills everyone in one attack. Save your game before taking a lone treasure chest in a circular room with yellow bricks. Sometimes when you beat the Dragon Ruler you will get a Spear(45). Hint : When you get to small circular rooms with yellow bricks, try to find exits from both the left and right sides. THE FINAL CONFRONTATION You won't be able to go back after this, so save a backup game. You probably will also want to make sure you have some items that restore WP in your inventory, because you'll use a lot. I also recommend having the magic spell "Self-Burning" for as many people as possible. Go to the other Japanese castle on the same screen as the first one. If you see soldiers walking around, go back to the friendly Japanese castle and talk to Baimeinyan. Now go upstairs and there will be a battle between two armies(like the one you played in the bar of Faris). After this, you will be face to face with a red Dragon Ruler. This beast is even stronger than the green one you fought in the Sunken Ruins(gasp!) It has all of the attacks that the green one has, plus it can set up a fire barrier around itself which will hit you for massive damage when you attack it. Try using "Self-Burning" to counteract its fire attacks. You might have to earn a very long time before you can topple this boss. Good luck. After you beat him go into the door. There are a lot of pretty hard enemies guarding doors, but if you were able to beat the red Dragon Ruler, you should also be able to take care of these. Upper bound on red Dragon Ruler's HP: 21824. Did you think you were done after beating the red Dragon Ruler? Go up to the top of the castle(defeating a lot of hard enemies along the way) and you'll see two people run away. Follow them and you'll get into a battle with an "Abyss Naga". It's pretty strong, and it regains 999 HP per round, but after the red Dragon Ruler, if you have enough WP left, you should be able to beat it. In the first version of the FAQ I wrote that it was stronger than the Dragon Ruler but actually I think it is quite a bit easier. If you're out of WP, check your items, some of them restore WP. Upper bound on Abyss Naga's HP: 17466. After you beat the Abyss Naga, it will fall off the castle with the guy who summoned it. Young will take you to another Gate. He will open it and you will walk inside. If you have six characters you'll have to dump one to make room for Young. You'll be able to go to a whole bunch of places that resemble the palaces you went through to get to the Abyss Gates, and you'll have to fight Aunas, Arakes, Byunei, and Forneus again. The glowing portal where you came from allows you to recover HP, WP, and JP. These bosses are extremely difficult, and you might have to earn to be able to beat them. I've found that the wisps in Aunas' section are the best enemies for earning in this area. Hope you saved a backup game outside! In my opinion, Forneus is the hardest of the guardians, so you might want to try the others first if you're having trouble on Forneus. AUNAS: Upper bound on HP: 52148 The strategy for beating this Aunas is the same as the strategy for beating the first one. Choose a formation that spreads your characters out and use "Self-Burning" on as many as possible. Attack with your best techniques, but beware of the fact that you will lose your "Self-Burning" if you are hit with a physical attack. He's still very hard to beat. ARAKES: Upper bound on HP: 56068 Arakes has a number of attacks that affect all of your characters, and those are the most damaging. Use your best attacks and make sure you have enough potions. There is a defense technique that allows you to resist its most powerful attack, use it if you have it. BYUNEI: Upper bound on HP: 51464 This time you don't have Guwein to take all the damage for you. Byunei has a high annoyance factor because of all the status changing attacks she uses. Just keep attacking and healing your characters and you should be fine. The most difficult thing about Byunei is that she keeps trying to charm your allies. They may end up doing more damage than Byunei does. If you've mastered the defense technique that prevents charm, it would be a good idea to give it to all of your characters(except Leonid, who's already resistant to charm). FORNEUS: Upper bound on HP: 59108 Forneus has command of a whole bunch of spear skills. He can do a lot of damage to all of your characters very quickly, so you need high HP. He doesn't even have to use "Squall" this time to gain 999 HP each round. Forneus has about 60000 HP and you will have to do a lot of damage fast to beat him. Leonid is really good because he is resistant to "Squall", the lightning attacks Forneus uses, and also the ice attack. Boston is also resistant to "Squall". After you beat the Abyss Gate Guardians, go into the middle teleporter and go up to fight the last boss. While you're enjoying the cool battle theme, be aware that the thing has extremely high defense power and your attacks will do less damage. At first the last boss is really easy and you're starting to think that after you beat those Abyss Gate Guardians, this should be a piece of cake, right? Wrong! After about 14000 damage, you'll get teleported to some other dimension(4th Dimension Magisphere??) and it will start morphing into all of the Abyss Gate Guardians you haven't beat in their respective lairs yet. Fortunately these will be in their original form and not their second form. Beat them and it will revert to its old form. At this point, it will start to use more attacks that affect all of your characters. It also gets a huge number of attacks per turn. If you manage to do about 16000 more damage, you will be teleported again. Now the boss gets incredibly hard. Every round you will lose about 100 HP per person(except for Leonid, who's immune). The boss gets multiple attacks per round that do a lot of damage and affect all of your characters. It also can make your characters attack each other. The only good thing is that this form has much lower defense power. If you survive this encounter long enough to do about 40000 damage, some words about "Abyss" something will flash on the screen. When you see this you're almost there. Do about 11000 more damage and you win! Upper bounds on: HP needed to reach morphing phase 14015 HP needed to reach second phase 16417 HP until the words flash on the screen 39488 HP after the words flash 11335 ----------------------------------------------- Total HP 71255 + HP of all the guardians you didn't beat yet Note 1: The HP estimates seem to vary depending on how many guardians you've killed. When I beat all of the guardians the last boss reached the second phase after only 21850 damage, not 14015 + 16417 = 30432. Also it sometimes takes longer to get the words to come up on the screen. Note 2: If you get killed against the last boss, you'll see a scene where the abyss gates open and the world gets destroyed. Mini-boss list: A Lilith that can summon Barbarians Nightflower A Medusa and two Bajirisuku Five multi-armed skeletons Mantis God Green and Red demons with clubs Benevolent King and two others that look like him Three green Dragon Zombies Two Kerberos Treasures: Behind a Lilith that can summon Barbarians: Hammer(10) x1 ? x1 Behind Green and Red demons with clubs: Boots(12, 7) x1 Armor(35, 8) x1 Behind Benevolent King and friends Duel Master(glove, 7, 7) x1 Armor(25, 25) x1 Congratulations! You have finished by far the most challenging RPG I have ever played. If you got to the end you have probably spent hours earning levels. Well, don't worry, the ending doesn't disappoint. Plus, the ending is slightly different depending on which scenario you beat. Enjoy the show! V. OTHER SCENARIOS You don't have to play the game as Julian. There are three other male characters and four female characters. You select one when you start the game(see Miscellaneous Questions #17). HARID'S SCENARIO The game starts out in the same bar that Julian's scenario started in. You see a flashback of something that happened in Harid's life, and then you see the same scene as in Julian's scenario. You'll then go to Sinnon Woods like in Julian's scenario. After Garuda Wing the other members leave and you'll go with Mikhail. You'll see a military conference and then you'll be in a field with some soldiers. Talk to some of them and you'll get into military battles(like the one in 17. FARIS). You can play around with battle strategies if you want, but the battles aren't hard. After you win a couple of battles you'll be in Loanne and Mikhail will join you. The town and castle are under attack by goblins. Go into the castle. When you go upstairs Katarina will join you. Go into the throne room and you'll fight a green demon. Beat it and you'll see the thank you scene like in Julian's scenario and you'll be able to explore Loanne. You can talk to Julian, Thomas, Sarah, and Ellen in the bar, but only Ellen will join you. If you talked to everyone in Loanne, you should be able to go to Myurusu. From there you can go to Tsuwaiku and the game is pretty much the same as Julian's. Note 1: When I played Harid's scenario, a cave appeared in the desert pretty early in the game(I hadn't even beaten the rats yet). Inside was an ancient tomb with a lot of great treasures: Bloody Sword(type 1, 19) x1 2000 aurums x2 Wine of the Gods x1 Armor(35, 8) x1 Hand of the Ghost God?(glove, 16, 4) x1 Sledgehammer(30) x1 ? x1 Boots(1, 6) x1 Tonic of the Heart? x1 ? x1 Kamsheen(41) [After the Dragon Ruler] x1 Go here once you can. As you can see, there's some really good equipment in here. If you find a large tomb and press 'A', you'll be given the option to say "hai" or "iie". Say yes and you'll fight a dreaded black Dragon Ruler. If you're at the beginning of the game, don't even think about being able to beat it. The Dragon Ruler has about 24000 HP and a lot of tough attacks. If you beat it you'll get the Kamsheen(the real one, not the ones that are called "Kamsheen" when Harid uses them but not on the item screen). It has 41 attack power and you'll use it for the rest of the game. Note: After you do a certain amount of damage, the Dragon Ruler will become more powerful(As if it weren't strong enough already). If you push 'A' on the other tombs in this room you'll fight Dragon Zombies. Even if you can't beat them(you don't get anything for beating them anyway), if you're at the beginning of the game they can be useful. Since they are much stronger than you, when you attack them you will learn new Waza very quickly. Save your game, fight them, and after you learn a Waza, run. Now you can repeat the process again. VI. BESTIARY Note: A star means that's not the actual name, but the name is in kanji so I'm not sure(e.g. *brown wolf). A plus means the name is directly translated into romaji (e.g. +Rappi). A ? in items means that the item's identity is not known. Name of enemy Upper bound on HP Items it can give *brown wolf 80 +Fei 160 *brown snake 94 Gem(3, 3) +Rappi 184 ?
