Front Mission Game Walkthrough By Nathan Stout nate555@flash.net http://www.flash.net/~nate555/frontmis/front.htm --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Game Basics. When you are not in a mission you are located at one of the many cities on Huffman. In these cities you go to the shops, bars, coliseum, military office, check your character's status, save and load games, and stock, setup your mechs, and exit to the next mission. When you are in a mission your move, attack, and use items during your (Player's) turn. When you are finished the enemy takes it's turn to move, attack, and use items. First lets look at what you can do in the cities and what certain buttons, functions, and screens do. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Understanding menus, buttons, places to go. A button: select button. B button: unselect/go back button. Start button: Used during a mission it allows you to choose from three options: * Player Phase End: If you don't' want to do anything else during your turn you can use this to go ahead and let the enemy makes it's move. * Config: Lets you adjust settings like message speed ect... * Interruption: This is a useful feature that lets you save the game in the middle of a battle. Battles last anywhere form 20 - 50 min. so if you need to rush off but don't' want to have to start the mission all over again you can use this save place. During the game you can visit different locations for weapons, parts, info, etc... Here is a list of the places and what to do when you get there. Shop: Here is where you buy new weapons, panzer parts, items, sell items, and customize your mechs. The options in the shop are: Setup - Here you add new weapons, armor, computers and back packs. There are several things that need explaining here. Weapons - You select weapons for Right and Left hands of the mech, You also select Missiles and shields for the mechs shoulders. Parts - You can select from this menu a new Body for your mech, new Right and Left arms, as well as new Legs, Computers and Backpacks.(Check below for more info on backpacks, and computers). Paint - Change the color of your mechs. Name - Change the name of your mech. * Buy - In this area of the shop you can buy mech parts (just like in the setup area) and items (Check below in Setup for descriptions of items). * Sell - Here you sell extra parts, weapons, and items. Remember to sell all the parts you replaced when you buy new parts for your mechs. * Talk - Talk to the shop owner. * Exit - Exit back to the city. Military Office: Here you are briefed by Olson on you missions. Before you can go to the mission, you must talk to him. Bar: At the bar you talk to the locals to gain information and sometimes pick up a new person for your team. Coliseum: Here is where you can make some money and gain a little experience fighting opponents. You can also pick up a few people from here. This is not a big source of money though (not for me anyway). Status Window: Here you can see the stats the members of your unit. Each character has a value for each type of fighting skill. * Fight - represents the hand to hand fighting like punching or using a club. If the character has a high number here it is better to let that character punch their enemy or use a club. They will cause more damage to their enemy. * Short - This represents using a short range weapon like a gun. If the character has a high number here it is better to equip that character with guns and let them shoot their opponent. * Long - This represents missile firing and long range guns. You should equip all you character's mechs with missiles. They are always useful. * Agility - This represents the character's ability to dodge an attack. Here in the status window is also the character's skills. When characters reach certain levels, (each character is different)(each level is reached by obtaining experience points when in battle) sometimes they will gain a new skill. Skills come in different levels, the higher the level, the better (or more frequently) the skill will work successfully. When you have an opportunity to gain a skill, you may choose one or Skip. You can Skip and wait until the skills go up another level. This takes awhile though. Here are the different skills. * Double - is where a character punches an enemy twice or even three times in a row. You must have both hand free to Double (no weapons in hands). * Speed - This will allow pilots to attack (gun or Short attack) first. * Stun - This skill allows for a Fight battling mech to stun their opponent which is the same as using a flash grenade. Note: The opponent can Wake (become unstunned) if that mech is punched or hit again. * Switch - When a mech with guns in both hands fires sometimes that mech will Switch and fire again with the gun in the other hand. * Duel - This allows you to choose which part of the enemy mech to do damage to (since it is random all the time). * First - This skill allows the pilot to attack (in hand to hand or Fight mode) first. * Guide - This option is the most important skills to have for all characters. This allows you designate what part of the enemy mech your missile should hit. These skills (after you have them are random (except Duel and Guide). Setup: This is just like the Shop's setup screen. The only difference is your can only use items in your inventory. This is where you stock your mechs with items you can use in battle like: * Repair - There are 4 types of repair: Small(50), Medium(100), Large(200) and Special(400). The more you upgrade your mech the more armor you will have and the larger repair you will need. * Flash Grenade - These are very useful and will get you through missions with less damage. You use these to blind an enemy mech . The flash grenade makes the mech you shot it at loose it's next turn. VERY USEFUL! * B.A. Mine - These are mines you lay on the ground for your opponent to walk on. I do not use them that much. * Chaff Grenade - Use these when you want to protect a mech form enemy missile fire. Very useful when you need to protect a badly damaged mech. * Smoke Grenade - I don't know yet. Haven't ever used one. Save / Load: Here you can save and load from 2 save spots. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- What to do when you want to go on the next mission. When you are in a city and you want to go to the next mission, first go to the military office. Olson will brief you and sometimes give you info on the enemy. Then you go to the EXIT option on the main city screen and press A. Be sure you have all the supplies and mech upgrades you need before you start a mission! When you go into battle (the mission) you are required to select who to take with you on the mission. You move to each mech by pressing down on the direction pad and you select that mech by pressing the A button. When you have select all the mechs you can select a little menu pops up that you use to go on into battle. Note: When in battle, when a mech is destroyed (yours or an enemies) the person inside is not killed. Son don't panic if your of your guys' mech's get destroyed. At the end of each mission you get money for completing the mission and each mech you destroy. You get penalized (money taken away) for each mech in your unit that gets destroyed, but the character is still alive. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hints Follow these helpful tips when playing: * When it just seems to take forever to destroy an enemy mech, gang up on it. Have all your mechs attack one mech. * Don't split up your unit. Keep your mechs together, move together. * Make sure everyone in your unit has a chance to make the 'final blow' to an enemy mech. When an enemy mech is destroyed, a lot of experience points are given to the person who destroyed it. This will ensure that all your people will have high levels. * When you visit cities, upgrade your mechs as much as you can. * Don't go on consecutive missions. Go back to a city to resupply and upgrade before moving on to another mission. * Save your progress at each chance. * Upgrade all your mech at each city with the best parts and weapons. Do this after each mission!!!! * When in battle get rid of the missilers first. They will cause you the most trouble. * Don't let damaged enemy mechs get to their supply trucks. They will be repaired after one turn. Try to destroy enemy supply trucks quickly. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Game! The Larcus Indicent The game begins after you have selected a your name and your callsign. You are thrust right into your first battle. Karen (your girl) is being chased by Driscoll, a high ranking military officer in the USN. You must save Karen and defeat the USN mechs. You have assisting you Sakata and an unnamed OCU solider. Mission 1 Enemy units: 5 Notes: 1.) No matter what you do you cannot save Karen. Her mech is destroyed and she is captured (or killed?) 2.) After you destroy the 4 mechs Driscoll blows up the warehouse. You are disgraced and the story picks up a year later when Olson recruits you for the OCU. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- The to city of Barinden 1.) Here in the city of Barinden you meet Olson in the coliseum. You will have to fight someone so Olson can see how good you are. It doesn't matter if you win or lose the fight. 2.) After the fight you will be on the city main menu. Go to the Military Office. Here you will talk to Olson and he will ask for your help. Choose YES. * Natalie is introduced and is now part of your unit. 3.) You can go around Barinden and do what you want. Be sure to upgrade your mech! 4.) When you are finished in the city SAVE your progress and go to EXIT. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Mission 2 Enemy units: 8 Notes: 1.) Keith and J.J are introduced and join your unit right away. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- To the city of New Milgan --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Mission 3 Enemy units: 9 Notes: 1.) Fredrick is introduced here. He is a reporter (I think). He begins as a NPC (non-player character). This means he will act on his own, which is not good. You must attempt to keep him from getting killed. 2.) Before you actually begin you will go to the unit select screen. Here you will choose which mechs will go with you on this mission (see what to do when you want to go on a mission, above). 3.) As soon as you begin this mission, go and protect Fredrick. Attack the mechs that attack him, ect... --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Back to the city of New Milgan --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Mission 4 Enemy Units: 10 Notes: 1.) Pewee is introduced in this mission. He is apart of a convoy that is attacked by USN mechs. You must protect the trucks. They cannot be destroyed! 2.) The trucks will pull off the road and drive into a dense wooded area. Use this to your advantage. Put your mechs in places where enemy mechs can't get around you because of the forest. Block those mechs! --------------------------------------------------------------------------- To the city of Menasa 1.) In the city of Menasa you are challenged (Olson asks you) to fight Yang, a Panzer Ace. You should go to the Coliseum and fight Yang. You can choose which mech should take her on. You must win to get her to join. If you loose, fight her again until you win. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Greyrock Mission 5 Enemy units: 13 Supply Trucks: 1 Notes: 1.) Driscoll is in this mission! Be careful. Don't advance toward him or he will attack. If he doesn't attack he will leave after all the other mechs are destroyed. If he does attack, forget it. He is WAY too powerful. He will wipe you out. Remember to always save in between missions. 2.) Paul is introduced here as a NPC. You should try to protect him. Don't worry if you can't (I never can). He almost always gets too far ahead to catch up to him and gets blown up. 3.) The supply truck leaves after a little while offering no repairs for the enemy troops. 4.) When you have destroyed all enemy mechs, Driscoll blows up some buildings nearby attempting to recreate the disaster that shamed you in the Larcus Incendent. Then the mission is over and Roid thinks back to the past and the way Driscoll trapped him before. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- To the city of Greyrock 1.) Olson tells you to look for a pilot named Hans. There is a new option on the city menu now called Seeker Hans. When you go here you will talk to Hans. When he asks to join choose YES. He doesn't go on missions for awhile though. 2.) Now go to the military office and Olson will assign Peewee to your unit. Peewee drives the Supply Truck. When in battle when you run out of missiles, need items, or you get an arm or leg blown off and need it repaired, you will need to go to the supply truck. To reload missiles, etc..., when in battle place your mech along side or infront or behind the supply truck. On your next turn, press the B button and choose SUPPLY. You will then go into the setup screen and here you can get supplies or change out mech parts. Your missiles are automatically refilled when you enter the setup screen. Your destroyed arms and legs are automatically repaired when you enter the setup screen, however, they will need to have a repair used on them to refill the HP. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Mission 6 Enemy units: 10 Notes: 1.) In this mission you need to destroy three missile launchers before OCU airplanes pass overhead. You have 8 (I think) turns in which to do this. Don't worry about the enemy mechs at first, go directly after the missile launchers. NOTE!!!: When this mission is over and the main map is shown, don't press the A button! Press left or right on the control pad until the line is pointing back to Greyrock. Then you can press the A button. If you don't do this you will go to the next mission right away and you wont be able to restock on items, ect.. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Back to the city of Greyrock --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Mission 7 Enemy units: 12 Notes: 1.) Here are some really tough mechs. They are huge and pack a punch! My suggestion is to stay put and let the enemy come to you. Remember to use Flash Grenades on the tough guys do they will loose turns. NOTE!!!: When this mission is over and the main map is shown, don't press the A button! Press left or right on the control pad until the line is pointing back to Greyrock. Then you can press the A button. In this mission you are fighting in the city. Stay put and let the enemy come to you. 2.) When you attack the boss mech. don't fight hand to hand or use a gun! Stay away from it and use missiles. Be sure to use a flash grenade on it each turn to keep it from attacking. 3.) When the mission is over Hans shows up and from now on he is in the unit. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- To the city of Freedom 1.) Go to the coliseum and Jorg is introduced. You must fight him and win in order for him to join your group. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Mission 9 Enemy units: 10 Supply trucks: 2 Notes: 1.) Muary is introduced in this mission as an NPC. You must try to protect him. He joins your group but doesn't fight with you for a couple of missions. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Back to the city of Freedom --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Mission 10 Enemy units: 12 Supply trucks: 3 Notes: 1.) USN mech are surrounding a OCU base (or their own base?) You can only fight with 8 mechs from your unit. I suggest you take the best mechs with you. 2.) Maury is an NPC again. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Back to the city of Freedom --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Mission 11 Enemy units: 12 Supply trucks: 1 Boss units: 2 Notes: 1.) Use flash grenades on the boss units and attack with missiles. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- To the city of Peseta 1.) After yo go to the military office 2 mechs start fighting in the city. You can choose to battle one of them to stop the fighting. Choose YES when prompted. When you win Bobby and Porguna will join your unit. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Mission 12 Enemy units: 12 Notes: 1.) Here you are going to sabotage a rail road line in order to capture something from the train. Hans sets the explosives and you watch the train try to escape but fail. Enemy mech come out of the train to attack. You have 8 turns to get to the caboose. 2.) There are supplies infront of most of the doors of the train. Just have your mechs stop infront of the train doors and you will pick up some weapons and supplies. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- To the city of Beltchka --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Mission 13 Enemy units: 9 --------------------------------------------------------------------------- To the OCU frontbase --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Mission 14 Enemy units: 11 Supply trucks: 1 Notes: 1.) Yeehin is introduced as an NPC and Yang is an NPC for the first couple of turns. You must protect Yeehin. Your best bet is to corner him in so he can't move. 2.) The enemy mech won't move for the first couple of turns, this is an excellent opportunity to attack the missilers that are at the top (North) of the map. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Back to the O.C.U. frontbase --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Mission 15 Enemy units: 12 Large cannons: 3 Small cannons: 4 Notes: 1.) Take your time on this mission. Reload your mechs' missiles often. Use flash grenades to make the cannons miss turns. Fredrick if fighting on Gentzs' side. I'm am not sure why, but he didn't attack me during battle so I didn't attack him. 2.) Stay up at the top of the mountains until most of the units are destroyed. Don't destroy Fredrick's mech. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Back to the City of Soleit 1.)
