"I feel like I have to write a miniature novel to explain this. Spoilers ahoy! We don't see much of Clyde's life, but it's full of tragedy. His tragic flaw cowardice. It's what causes him to leave his friend Baram to an uncertain fate, abandon his wife and child, and turns him into a masked, heartless killer. And, when he finally can't run from his past anymore, it's what ultimately leads to his death (whether this occurs at the Floating Continent or at Kefka's tower during the ending). For the purposes of this topic, I chose the point when he left his family as the center of all this tragedy. I think that's when he (figuratively) donned his mask for the first time, killed his emotions for good, and became Shadow."
