Wow that's weird-looking

The playable demo for Ys: Arc of Napishtim was depressingly small. Only a three or four screen area on the east side of the first island was open to wander through. However, what was there was really pretty. The graphics make good use of the PSP's impressive engine. Movement is fluid and there is little to no motion blur to worry about.

Battle is quick and deceptively difficult. Everything is done in real time, like it has been in most other Ys games. Areas do not contain hordes of enemies, but there are just enough to make it difficult if you don't use strategy. Add to that the rarity of healing items, and you really have to proceed carefully if you don't want to get whittled down to zero hit points in 3 screens.

Fire power!

The only downside I could find is, unfortunatly, a huge one. Load times are horrendous. The areas to explore are fairly large, but you do move between them often. Each time, there was a wait of 10-15 seconds while everything loaded. There was even a delay when trying to speak with NPCs; touching the button to speak with them, and the dialogue actually taking place were split by a few seconds.

Still, overall Ys: Ark of Napishtim looks to be a worth-while play. The American version is still under development, but hopefully we will see it on shelves before too long.
