Square's booth contained yet another gem: Fullmetal Alchemist. The game follows the tale of two boys (Edward and Al) who got a bit too involved with alchemy and now get to run around beating people up with their malformed bodies. The demo opened with a long animé cutscene of the boys and a general on a train that gets boarded by what else, people wanting valuables.
2 hit combo.
The player then gets to say "no" by using Edwards sword swinging and weapon making powers to mow through the thugs. Al also shows some resistance by using the biggest body I've ever seen with a 10 year old's voice. Al is basically a large suit of armor who can fight with you, either when you call him for help or when you ask him to tackle the enemies for you. As you're fighting, nearly any object that isn't bolted down (and some that are) can be turned into a weapon for Edward or Al. Edward can also use his alchemy straight up, making stone walls or spikes that respectively defend or attack his assailants.
The combat is a riot. You basically run around seeing what cool stuff you can make (like large cannons!) and use it against the enemies. For when you finally start meleeing, there's a combo system triggered by the correct button presses. All in all, the battle system looks great, the plot revealing cut scenes are fun to watch, and the graphics are pleasing to look at. It looks to be the total package. As long as the combat can stay interesting, this title will be a winner.
