The Saving Throw
Flaming Tavern July 26, 2006
Do dwarves and magic mix? Well, sometimes!

Mail Me | Contest #1 | Discuss | Roleplaying Forum

And so it begins. . .

Oh, how the months fly by. Believe it or not, this is already the last Saving Throw of July. It is as they say: tempus fugit.

The contest continues this week with Macstorm barely holding onto his lead while Carabbit has a near-perfect week. As for readers, Karlinn holds onto his lead with ten points, but gets no farther ahead of Leaper. Bainick enters, but has some bad luck and only gets 2 consolation points for his trouble. Not much is likely to change this week with only one contest entry by yours truly. Also, as you can see on the contest page, I'm considering some tweaks to the contest for the final four weeks (starting next week). Be sure to let me know what you think.

Also, I'll be taking a bit of a break next week. There will no regular Saving Throw column; just a contest update. So, contest entries will be accepted for next week, but any other submissions won't be published until August 9. Thus, this week's column contains release dates for up to two weeks ahead, though there's only a couple upcoming items I found. More than likely, I'll find more after the fact for the August 9 column.

With these announcements out of the way, it's time for the column.

Gaming Tip of the Week
"It is never wise to tell a dwarf he can't do something, especially when he's drunk."
- Nwash

Featured Hall of Fame Story

The Magical Dwarf by Nwash New this week
A drunken dwarf mage is told that dwarves cannot cast magic. Naturally, he has to prove this misconception wrong; unfortunately, he doesn't do so in the wisest of ways.

Hasbro Posts Second Quarter Financial Results
Source: Hasbro, Inc.

Hasbro, Inc., the corporate parent of Wizards of the Coast, recently posted second quarter earnings. This included both a note of good and a note of bad news. The bad news is that revenue for Star Wars-related products has fallen $84.8 million. This was an expected loss, however. The good news is that Magic: The Gathering products are performing strongly, helping to offset those losses. On an overall basis, the company is reporting a profit of $0.07 per diluted share, down from $0.11 the year before.

And so it ends. . .

Well, that's it for this week. I'll be back next week, but just for a contest update. I'll bring you the next regular column in two weeks, so see you then.
