The Saving Throw
Unwise Decisions June 14, 2006
Sometimes you just have to do what you have to do.

And so it begins. . .

Wednesday has come around again, and so I've rolled up another Saving Throw for you. This is another all-me week; I've written up a story about one of my earlier adventures. I would have written up another, but it's been a busy week and looks like it might stay that way for a while yet. Thus, you get to read about perhaps the most foolish decision I've ever made as a player, and how a kind DM decided to spare the party.

I'm afraid we still don't have prizes ready for the contest; I apologize for overestimating how quickly that would happen. I will start the contest as soon as possible, though. I promise.

Again, today's column has another long list of release dates. I've become better at digging up information on the tabletop gaming industry recently, so I suspect these long lists will start becoming more common. While I found nothing scheduled for next week, I wouldn't be surprised to see quite a few pop up in the next column; that seems to be the way of things in this industry.

But alas, it's time for me to shut up and let the column speak for itself, and thus, enjoy the Saving Throw.

Gaming Tip of the Week

Turning and Fighting by Nwash New this week
There are times when discretion is definitely the better part of valor and the decision to turn and fight really isn't anything but stupid. Fortunately, this stupidity only cost us one horse.

Magic: The Gathering Tenth Edition Selection to Begin Soon
Source: Wizards of the Coast

Over the next ten weeks, Wizards of the Coast will be running Selecting Tenth Edition for Magic: The Gathering. This is an opportunity for Magic fans to influence cards that will be included in the tenth core set for the game. Several aspects, including what cards are included, which artist will work on certain cards, the land block to be used on cards, the flavor text, and possibly even more. These decisions will be made through votes which will occur over the course of the next ten weeks. A similar event occurred for the eighth and ninth edition core sets.

Shogun Offering Gifts at GenCon Indy
Source: Alderac Entertainment Group

The top of Clan for each faction at for the Legend of the Five Rings TCG at GenCon Indy 2006 are being given a choice to make. The Shogun is offering them the service of one of his most trusted advisors, and the clans must choose one of these ten advisors to aid them and bring power to their clan. They also have the option of refusing, though this will likely offend the Shogun. New cards will be coming out for these advisors later this year, and they will be aligned to their patron clan. Sneak previews of these personalities will appear on the official site over the next several weeks.

And so it ends. . .

So, in order to avoid another all-me week here, I'd like to read your stories about the most unwise decision you or one of your fellow players have ever made in tabletop gaming, just as I have shared mine. It doesn't matter whether it worked out or didn't; there will be golden carets in it for you.

That concludes this Saving Throw. I'll see you again next week with another Saving Throw.
