Chapter two of the Rise of the Runelords campaign embroils the players in a rousing
murder mystery in the familiar surrounding of Sandpoint and concludes in the sprawling metroplis of Magnimar.
The author of this chapter's adventure, Richard Pett, lives up to his reputation with a stirring story mixing
the familiar with the deadly to keep the players on their toes. The story is
excellently written with more than one opportunity to both scare the players and test
their deductive abilities at the same time. The maps provided with this chapter are
once again top notch, as are the illustrations of NPCs, monsters and locations.
The background provided for the city of Magnimar fleshes out the second major city in
the Rise of the Runelords campaign, and provides ample ways for a Game Master
to tie it into an existing campaign, if necessary. However, the story, characters, and
organizations introduced and expounded upon in this chapter increases the difficulty
of that task somewhat.
This chapter once again presents an entry in the Pathfinder's Journal, helping to
introduce the Game Master to other areas surrounding Magnimar not presented in the
main adventure and a bestiary covering typical monster encounters. These new monsters
range from low to mid level, so adding them here or there as needed is simply a
pick and choose task.
With the second chapter of the Rise of the Runelords campaign, Paizo has
once again delivered on their promises to the readers of Dragon and Dungeon
magazines, and continued to meet the expectations of excellence in their products.
