Into the Haunted Forest differs from most of the modules
in the Game Mastery line on two main aspects. One, it is a much shorter adventure than
the rest of the line, and second it takes place in a relatively small area and short
span of time.
The adventure is intended to be picked up and played with first level characters, but
some of the encounters can easily kill a party that has only a few missteps. As such,
it serves best as an opening adventure for a campaign with seasoned players.
Into the Haunted Forest can be separated into two distinct sections. The
first is a short "whodunit" that the player characters become embroiled in following a
brawl in a roadside inn, and the second a scavenger hunt to repair the wrongs committed
during the brawl. This mix of styles gives players a chance to hone both diplomacy
and non-lethal tactics along with the more violent aspects of adventuring.
On the surface this adventure seems like a likeable foray into a haunted forest, but
the fun unfortunately breaks down rather quickly if the player characters make even
slightest of misteps. Perhaps the most redeeming quality of the adventure is its
low introductory price.
