White Wolf Publishing, makers of Vampire: the Masquerade, announced this morning that they would be publishing a roleplaying game based on Stephanie Meyer's popular Twilight series of novels. When asked about the move, WW's spokesperson responded "We got our start in this business by jumping pretty hard on the Anne Rice bandwagon, and while that has served us well for the past 20 years, we feel we're passed due to move along with times. We believe that Meyer's fanbase can be our bread and butter in the coming years much as the was the Goth crowd was throughout the 1990's."

Also noteworthy is the new format White Wolf wishes to explore for this new product line, rather than the model typical of licensed games the Twilight RPG will insert rules text and examples of mechanics into the Twilight novels themselves, as most World of Darkness gamers prefer the fiction to the rules text and Twilight fans are clamouring for any excuse to purchase and re-read the series again. For example:

As far as I was aware, [Charlie had] never shot the gun on the job (2d Firearms + Specialization: Pistol). But he kept it ready. When I came here as a child, he would always remove the bullets as soon as he walked in the door. I guess he considered me old enough now not to shoot myself by accident (a character with no dots in a particular skill may still make an attempt as a chance roll, however if the result of this roll is a 1 a dramatic failure occurs), and not depressed (minor derangement) enough to shoot myself on purpose (In the case of Firearms attacks a target's defense does not apply, except in close range combat. Each success rolled on the Firearms attack deals one point of lethal damage).

The first book of the new line, entitled Twilight: the Sparkling will be released this October, with subsequent volumes; New Moon: the Wangsting, Eclipse: The Mumbling, and Breaking Dawn: the Pandering will release each 6 months thereafter with pdf supplements based on The Short Second life of Bree Tanner and Midnight Sun to hit the internet during the Summer of 2012.
