Welcome to MMORPGamer.

Happy Valentine's Day to one and all in the MMORPG community. Whether you like to party in full T6 armor in World of Warcraft or swashbuckle for love in Pirates of the Burning Sea, I hope you're having a good time doing it.

This week we've got a lot of fun news without much progress in the games we love. For more, gaze on:

  Blizzard Thanks the Academy

World of Warcraft

Last week, the Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences gave out the 11th annual Interactive Achievement Awards. Blizzard took home two awards that night. The Burning Crusade, the first expansion to World of Warcraft, was awarded Massively Multiplayer Game of the year while Blizzard's president and CEO Mike Morhaime was inducted in the Academy's Hall of Fame.

This stands as just another great testament to the giant that is WoW. Hopefully the Blizzard team doesn't stagnate in its success, as we haven't seen much in the past few months. The upcoming 2.4 patch won't have quite the zing that an early release of Wrath of the Lich King would have.

  Cryptic's Next MMO Revealed

City of Heroes

Game Informer's leaked some details to Eurogamer regarding Cryptic's new MMORPG, entitled Champions Online. The game will feature the playable villains and heroes, much like City of Heroes, the brainchild of Cryptic's that is now completely under NCSoft's jurisdiction.

This announcement comes after Marvel Universe Online was cancelled just three days ago. Champions Online looks like it's the salvaged bits of the failed IP. The game is planned for "consoles" and PC, just like MUO. All you City players should keep an eye out for this one.

  Aussies Get Free Pirates

Pirates of the Burning Sea

With the release of Pirates of the Burning Sea in Australia on February 27th, Flying Lab is giving free downloads to anyone and everyone that wants it, provided they're Aussies, of course.

The game won't come without the monthly fee, but the lack of price on the box means that players will save enough money to pay for the first four months at least. Players who register early have a chance to get one of 100,000 DVD versions of the game. To pre-register, visit the official site.

  More Connect Goodies

This week, Codemasters released info on a new deal with tickets purchased to Connect 2008, the upcoming festival in celebration of all things Codemasters. All RF Online players will receive a new set of level 50 armor set for a character.

In the sweetest part of the deal is the designer: Masamune Shirow. Famous for mangas like Ghost in the Shell and Appleseed, the armor looks great. To see all of the different armor sets for each class, visit the official forum post.

  O RLY? YA RLY!
Web to MMO from RocketOn

Startup RocketOn released a press release this week announcing their new MMO project. Official word is as follows:

"What would it be like if people could take a virtual world with them wherever they go on the Internet?" says Steven Hoffman, CEO. "The answer we came up with is a parallel experience, where players rocket through cyberspace with their avatar and interact with virtual environments on almost every website they visit."

I have no idea what this means. It sounds remotely cool, but further inspection at the official site garners no real information past the alpha sign up. It's anyone's guess what type of gameplay will be in store, but the potential inherent in such a vague description is huge. Let's hope this becomes something of interest in the near future.

  Media Grotto
Azerothian Super Villains

World of Warcraft

This week in the Media Grotto lands Illidan and his pals with Azerothian Super Villains. This is one of the best machinima series I've seen in a while. Currently on episode five, it's definitely worth watching.

My conquest of Halo 3 this week has garnered a return to WoW for a bit. My new gnome warrior is tanking Blood Elves with reckless abandon. Thank goodness for tiny meat shields. Any fellow alt addicts out there? Altaholics, feel free to write in with tales of your many tiny MMO babies running around.

I'm off to enjoy a wonderful Valentine's Day, and I suggest you do the same ingame or out. Cheers to amorous feelings everywhere, be they personal, interpersonal, or metapersonal.

Have a good one,
Jake Miller (mail me)
