Valkyria Chronicles 4

Sega released some new information and screenshots for the upcoming tactical RPG Valkyria Chronicles 4. The update introduces four more characters — Angelica, Minerva, Karen, and Ragnarok — as details the level-up, order, and potential mechanics that return from previous games in the series. In addition, the company also held a livestream earlier today featuring various bits of gameplay.

Angelica Farnaby is a civilian who joins up with Squad E after they find her without any memories except for her name. She helps by taking care of various support duties such as cooking and laundry. Meanwhile, Minerva Victor is the leader of Squad F and considers herself Squad E's leader Claude's rival. Though she graduated second behind Claude, she was promoted to first lieutenant before him. Karen Stewart is Squad E's medical officer and hopes to go to medical school after volunteering in the military. Assisting Karen is Ragnarok, the unit's mascot who also works as a medical dog, who will run into the battlefield to assist wounded soldiers.

Leveling units is done between missions by visiting the training grounds. Here, players can spend experience points to raise levels. Rather than leveling up individual units, however, players level up unit classes. As previously detailed, there are six classes to level up, though higher level classes will become available by levelling up the originals. These new classes become available at level eleven, and provide new options such as general ability boosts, a rifle grenade for scouts, a flamethrower for assault troops, and more.

Despite leveling up in groups, each unit is differentiated by abilities called potentials. There are two types of potentials: battle potentials, which raise abilities and are gained by levelling up, and personal potentials, which are unique to that character and his or her personality and can change when story missions are completed or in other circumstances. Battle potentials are generally positive, but personal potentials can be positive or negative. Valkyria Chornicles 4 also includes special orders that can be given by the main protagonist and enemy bosses. By spending command points, the character can undertake special actions such as sending in reinforments or providing attribute boosts.

Valkyria Chonricles 4 is planned for release in Japan for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on March 21, 2018, with a Switch version arriving in summer 2018. The game is also set to be released for those same platforms in North America and Europe in 2018.
