Final Fantasy XIV: Stormblood

During last weekend's Tokyo Fan Fest, the developers for Final Fantasy XIV revealed more details about the upcoming expansion, Final Fantasy XIV: Stormblood, including its release date. The expansion will be released worldwide on June 20, 2017, for PlayStation 4, PC, and Mac. The PlayStation 4 and PC versions will be available in physical and digital forms, with the Mac version being digital-only. The expansion will also receive a Collector's Edition. The edition has not been priced yet but will contain the following:

  • Stormblood special art box (artwork by Yoshitaka Anamo)
  • High-quality Zenos Yae Galvus figure
  • Final Fantasy XIV: Stormblood Art Book
  • Cloth map of Eorzea
  • Stormblood logo sticker
  • Exclusive in-game items: Syldra Mount, Wind-up Bartz Minion, Chicken Knife

During the keynote, it was confirmed that the Red Mage will be a new job added with the expansion. It will be available from level 50 and, like the three jobs introduced in Heavensward, does not have a base class. The Red Mage is a DPS role that switches between ranged magic attacks and melee attacks using a rapier. It focuses on high-speed positioning and can cause high damage by linking spells together with chainspell and then following this up with melee attacks.

Stormblood will also introduce swimming. Characters will automatically swim when entering an accessible area of water. Mounts will also be able to swim, but only those that are able to fly. Certain bodies of water in areas added with the expansion will also allow players to dive. There are no loading times or combat when swimming.

A new beast tribe was also confirmed, called the Ananta. A solely female race, they have a serpent-like design and worship the primal Lakshmi, the Lady of Bliss. Two raids were also revealed. The first is "The Bend of Time – Omega". Omega is a monster buried under the Carteneau Flats that has been mentioned in the main story and which has a connection to Bahamut. The second raid is titled "Return to Ivalice". Exact details have not been revealed, but the story for the raid is being written by Final Fantasy Tactics creator Yasumi Matsuno.

Stormblood is the second expansion to the MMORPG, which was relaunched as Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn in August 2013. The expansion focuses on the the city-state of Ala Mhigo, which was conquered by the Garlean Empire sometime prior to the game's events. Stormblood will be available for PlayStation 4, PC, and Mac. The PlayStation 3 version of the game will cease service upon Stormblood's release, though players will be able to upgrade to the PlayStation 4 version for free.
