Masquerada: Songs and Shadows

Witching Hour Studios confirmed that its isometric RPG, Masquerada: Songs and Shadows, will be coming to PlayStation 4. Originally announced for PC and Mac, the game is planned for a spring 2016 release.

In a PlayStation Blog post, Creative Director Ian Gregory detailed some of the ideas behind the game. While DMing tabletop campaigns he set out to avoid the common issue of magic characters outclassing their more physical allies. Ian achieved this by allowing anyone to gain access to magic if they can get their hands on a mask, something that has been translated into Masquerada by featuring the arts — such as song, dance, and sports — as a focus for controlling magic.

The game's is inspired by classic cRPGs such as Baldur's Gate and Neverwinter Nights, basing its battles on those titles' real-time systems with the addition of tactical pausing to try and add both depth and control to combat. On the other hand, the development team has looked to remove aspects that it feels are superfluous to Masquerada's experience, notably inventory management and traditional experience points. The game also looks to avoid throwing too many skill options at players, instead giving each character five customisable skills.

Masquerada: Songs and Shadows is due to be released in spring 2016 for PC, Mac, and PlayStation 4. An announcement trailer for the game can be viewed below.
