Final Fantasy XIV: Heavensward

Square Enix used its keynote at this weekend's Tokyo Fan Festival for Final Fantasy XIV to reveal more details about the MMORPG's upcoming expansion, Heavensward. This information was then followed-up with the announcement of patch 2.5, Before the Fall, which will be released some time before the expansion.

One key area of the expansion is the three new jobs that will come with it. First is the already revealed tank job, Dark Knight, which uses a two-handed sword. This has now been joined by the previously teased gun-toting, ranged damage-dealing Machinist, with the final class being the new healer job, Astrologian, which uses a star globe and tarot cards. Unlike the recently released Rogue class and Ninja job, these new jobs do not feature a new base class.

Also revealed was the identity of the game's new sixth race. The Au Ra are horned humanoids, with what appears to be a larger dimorphism between its male and female members than other races.

Other new content made an appearence in the keynote, including a dragon mount, which joins the black chocobo as one of the game's new aerial methods of transport. On top of this, it was revealed that there would a new raid dungeon called Alexander, which is based on the series' recurring summon.

Finally, a Collector's Edition was revealed for Heavensward, although the price has yet to be confirmed. However, it will feature artwork from Yoshitaka Amano, plus an art book, a dragon mount figurine, and few in-game vanity items. The Heavensward expansion is due to be released for PC, PlayStation 3, and PlayStation 4 in Spring 2015.

For the patch 2.5 details, the Manderville Gold Saucer made an appearance. The Gold Saucer is a recreational area that features chocobo racing, the Triple Triad card game, and other mini-games. There was also the reveal of three new dungeons — The Keeper of the Lake, plus hard mode versions of The Wanderer's Palace and Ampador Keep — and the next section of the Crystal Tower series of raid dungeons. This patch does not yet have a confirmed date, but will be released before Heavensward.
