Though it was announced earlier this year that Yakuza 5 was officially in development, Sega and series creator Toshihiro Nagoshi had said little on the game. On a recent live broadcast on Japanese website Nico Nico Video, Nagoshi dropped a few details on the game. Yakuza 5 will take place in the fictional city of Kamurocho, the same as in previous games, as well as one other location. The current candidate cities are Sapporo, Nagoya, Osaka, and Fukuoka. The developers have not decided if there will be hostess auditions for the hostess component yet. Nagoshi was not willing to say how many playable characters the game will have but did say that it would be unthinkable to have a Yakuza game without Kazuma Kiryu.

Going back to the second, currently unrevealed location, Sega has opened a survey off the Yakuza series portal on which of the cities they want the game to take place in. Visitors can also state why they want Yakuza 5 to take place in said city. The results of the survey will be announced at a later date on the Yakuza portal. Sega did not state whether this survey will have any sway in the final decision.

Yakuza 5 is currently being developed for the PlayStation 3 by Amusement Vision and is being published by Sega. It has no known release date, and no release outside of Japan has been announced.
