Electronic Arts announced today the purchasing of Pandemic Studios and RPG developer BioWare. EA is paying over $800 million dollars to acquire these companies. $650 million of which, went to the stock holders of VG Holding Corp, who directly owns both of the studios. The other $155 million is being paid to certain employees of VG.

"We are truly excited by John Riccitiello's new vision for EA," said Ray Muzyka, Co-founder and CEO of BioWare Corp, in the press release issued today. "This vision is consistent with BioWare's focus on crafting the highest quality story-driven games in the world. It will enable us to further the careers of the passionate, creative and hard working teams at BioWare Edmonton and BioWare Austin."

BioWare is known for classic RPGs such as Baldur's Gate and Neverwinter Nights, and more recently, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic and Jade Empire. EA's current purchase will not affect the release of BioWare's newest RPG, Mass Effect, which will still be released this November and published by Microsoft. The transaction of the companies is not expected to close until January 2008. For a copy of the official press release, visit EA's investor website.
