Square Plots PlayOnline's Course

Square has revealed its fee structure and financial projections for its fast-appproaching PlayOnline service. The company has stood firm in its estimate of requiring 200,000 users a year to break even, at an average rate of $10.00 a month per user. This rate includes a variety of optional fees users can choose to incur, and so basic service on PlayOnline will likely be somewhat cheaper.

In order to amass its desired level of subscription, Square will ship 400,000 copies of the PlayOnline package, hoping to snare 250,000 users in its first year of operation. The company is optimistic that this number will rise to 400,000 or more users by the end of the service's second year.

The PlayOnline service will be launched chiefly to provide Square's upcoming Final Fantasy XI with a platform from which to operate. There will also be a number of other features included in the software, however, including chat, a revised edition of the Tetra Master card game, and various other extras.
