Mac's Final Fantasy 30th Anniversary Journey - Issue 25

Final Fantasy

This week marks the start of a couple new Final Fantasy games, as I now have Stormblood installed as well as Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age. I typically play only one console game at a time, but I will be making an exception to play both of these in tandem. After all, it's not everyday you get to play two great Final Fantasy games at the same time.

If you want to catch up on my prior pieces, here's a link to Issue 24 from last week.

Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age (PS4)

One of my regrets when I played Final Fantasy XII back in 2006 was that I felt like I needed to rush through it. I pressed myself to play as much as possible and didn't savor the game the way I do with games now, a comment that might seem funny to people who already think I play games too quickly, but it's true.

That said, I've really just scratched the surface so far. I fought through the tutorial with poor Reks and have chipped away at more of the intro content with Vaan, including my first hunt to kill the Rotten Tomato. It was a mercy killing, so I didn't feel that bad. I'll be honest, after hitting a wall early on trying to replay Final Fantasy X HD a few times, I've been scared that perhaps FFXII wouldn't live up to my memory of the original, but so far I'm still loving the same things I did originally.

While it's still early, a lot of the updates are just fantastic. Fast-forward is a life saver, as it just gets things moving at a fast pace and auto-save along with suspend mode on PS4 have been invaluable. The camera is still wonky at times, especially when sped up, but I've adapted to it and am ready to progress further. I'm still hesitant about the job system, as I hate being locked into decisions this early in the game, but I have planned my party and am ready to go. Let's hope this works out as planned. Now I just need to get the whole gang together and start programming my party members. Oh, and on one final note, Remote Play via Vita works amazingly well so far.
