Disgaea 4: A Promise Revisited

Disgaea 4: A Promise Revisited is a port of 2011's stellar PS3 strategy RPG. Like the previous ports of this series, A Promise Revisited includes new content and features to differentiate it from the original release. There don't appear to be any graphical updates, but Disgaea 4's updated environments and sprites do look much better through the Vita's smaller resolution than they did on PS3. Like Disgaea 3 on Vita before it, the character portraits look great and animate nicely during cutscenes.

As far as new features go, A Promise Revisited adds a number of tweaks taken from entries throughout the series. The biggest is a feature taken from the Vita version of Disgaea 3, whereby generic classes used by player-created characters will now have unique skills in addition to those provided through weapons. This actually added a lot to Disgaea 3 on Vita, which was mostly a straightforward port, and should do the same here. Many of these new class abilities are quite useful and should give those who have already played Disgaea 4 new tricks to play with. Similarly, a new high tier of spells has been added from the PSP port of Disgaea 2, and the cheat shop from Disgaea D2 has been brought in as well. These aren't as significant changes, but are still useful new tools for players.

The other new addition is the inclusion of all the original's along with additional story content on top of that. This brings up the port's biggest issue for those who have already played the original, which is the inability to import a PS3 save. This means there is no way to see any of the new content without starting from the beginning. This won't be an issue for those new to the game, but for those who just want to get to the new content it is a major drawback. Other than that, Disgaea 4: A Promise Revisited looks and runs just as well as it did on the PS3. For more details on the core features of the game, be sure to check out my original review.
