What does one do after working on Far Cry 3? Apparently, one gets off the AAA development treadmill for a bit and creates a hand-drawn platformer/turn-based RPG hybrid that tells the coming-of-age story of a young girl. That's what a small team at Ubisoft is doing, and their creation is titled Child of Light.
This unique game stars Aurora, a young girl whose soul is transported to a magical land ruled by an evil queen. Aurora is controlled like a typical game protagonist, navigating the world and fighting monsters with a magic sword. An optional co-op player can take on the role of Igniculus, Aurora's supernatural companion who can heal and support her, as well as reach areas that Aurora cannot.
RPGamers may be interested in the game's Active Time Battle System meter, which tracks how soon all characters in a battle can move. Igniculus can manipulate this meter, blinding foes in order to slow them down.
Child of Light will be available on PS4, PS3, Wii U, Xbox 360, Xbox One, and PC next year. The announcement trailer below shows the game's 2D art style in motion.
