Bethesda Prepares for Future Fallout
08.05.2008

Unsuspecting RPGamers had better make plans to stockpile essentials, fortify their lead-lined subterranean bunkers, and drink in one last fleeting gulp of the outside world. With the ravenously anticipated sequel Fallout 3 just a precious few lunar cycles away from irradiating PCs, 360s, and PS3s across the land, gamers need not fear that this necessarily be their final jaunt into the smoldering wastes of the familiar world that once was.

Bethesda Softworks, perhaps best known for the decidedly more medieval Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, recently assumed control of the Fallout license and with the third installment in this popular series a scant few lunar cycles from shipping, the company has decided to let fans know that there will inevitably be even further installments.

Bethesda's Pete Hines recently stated in interview: "The whole reason we went out and acquired the license and that we now own Fallout is that we clearly intended to make more than one. This is not something we're going to do once and then go away and never do it again...we acquired it specifically because we wanted to own it and develop it and work on it like we do with The Elder Scrolls."

In an industry so firmly established on the backs of long running cash cow franchises currently coasting on their nth iterations, this news may come as unsurprising. However given that previous titles in the Fallout series were produced by the turmoiled Interplay Entertainment, such a confirmation should be comforting to long time series fans. Bethesda's zero hour approaches quickly, as Fallout 3 is scheduled for North American release on October 7, 2008 for the PC, Xbox 360, and PS3.
