New Things at RPGamer

Over the past few days, a few additions and improvements have been applied to RPGamer. The first new thing is the addition of an RSS feed. In the past, RPGamer had an RSS feed, but multiple things led to a part of that eventually being broken for a good long while. We have gone in and fixed all of its issues, and it's now back and here to stay. See the button in the lower left-hand part of the web page labeled "RSS 2.0" to grab the link to use in your favorite news aggregator.

If you don't know what the heck an RSS feed is, it's basically something that you can use to have links automatically sent to you, in real time as they're added to RPGamer's main page, via a piece of software called a "news aggregator" that can be anything from an email client such as Outlook or Thunderbird, a web browser such as Mozilla Firefox, or a stand-alone client. For a more detailed explination of RSS, see Wikipedia's entry on RSS.

The other change is something that is less beneficial to RPGamer's readers. By going through referrer logs recently, we noticed that the problem of other websites hotlinking and linking directly to files that reside on RPGamer's servers was becoming too widespread for our tastes. Thus, we have activated hotlinking protection on our servers. What this means is that if you directly link to a file on RPGamer's servers, be it a movie, a picture, a sound file, or what have you, then the person clicking on that link will be redirected to RPGamer's main page. Further, if someone "hotlinks" to a file on RPGamer (like posting an image that resides on our servers directly into a web page), then that image will be broken. We apologize for any inconvenience that this may cause.

We have noticed, unfortunately, that we still have a few kinks to work out with that. If you notice things on RPGamer acting a bit weird for the next few days, it may be due to things we still need to work out with our hotlinking protection. We're working to rectify these issues as quickly as we can.

If you have any questions, comments, concerns, or anything else to say, send an email to webmaster@rpgamer.com and we'll get back with you as soon as we're able. Thanks for reading; we have many more changes and improvements to the site in queue, so look forward to hearing about those soon.
