PlayOnline Beta Test Underway in Japan

Square has implemented the first stage of the beta test for its PlayOnline service, and a Japanese fansite, Quiter-W, has managed to snag one of the beta kits, from which they've garnered some media and impressions.

The most noticeable thing about the beta is its noticeable lack of gaming software currently. With Final Fantasy XI not due to begin beta testing until next year, the network is, at this point, comprised of online manga, magazines, and real-time chat. There is one game; the much-maligned Tetra Master, the card mini-game found in Final Fantasy IX is included with the beta kit. The game has been spruced up somewhat, with both real players and the CPU as potential opponents. There is also a full ranking mode, which will track player statistics. Players will also be able to compete online auctions of rare cards which will eventually be conducted. Square is even adding a few new cards; character cards, which did not appear in Final Fantasy IX, will be part of the basic set.

On top of the somewhat limited selection of fun and games, PlayOnline is highly customizable. Not only can gamers choose background music and a unique wallpaper, character portraits, which players can use as avatars, will be available from Square's back catalogue.

PlayOnline was originally developed as a platform for Final Fantasy XI's online elements, and has now grown into Square's complete online presence. The North American service should be up and running by 2002.
