Interplay Problems Creep Up Again
Interplay Logo

Despite the earlier takeover by Titus Interactive, Interplay has been caught up in more financial troubles as auditors expressed doubt at the firm's ability to continue past December 31, 2001. Fueled by a resulting 24% drop in shares, Interplay also announced that it suffered a wider loss and decreased revenues in the second fiscal quarter, as compared to last year. The estimates set out by analysts for Interplay's second fiscal quarter were missed.

Interplay has also filed a Form 10-Q with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, saying it was in violation of its credit agreement covenants, and had been paying a $250,000 (USD) sum for being late in filing a stock registration. A Form 10-Q is a report that is compiled and filed quarterly, by most companies that divulges unaudited financial statements, and provides a continuing view of the company's financial position during the year.

Interplay has been a long-standing publisher in the PC RPG market, turning out favorites such as the Fallout series, and the Baldur's Gate series. Their wholly-owned RPG subsidiary, Black Isle Studios, also garnered high accolades in creating the PC RPGs Planescape: Torment, Icewind Dale, Icewind Dale: Heart of Winter, and Icewind Dale: Trials of the Luremaster. Snowblind Studios' Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance, and Bioware's Neverwinter Nights are Black Isle's current RPG projects since BIS: Torn was cancelled. Whether this news jeopardizes the 2002 release of Neverwinter Nights remains to be seen, as Interplay still has a chance to recover.
