After its movie received a lukewarm reception in theatres, Columbia TriStar Home Entertainment is hoping the DVD and VHS releases of Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within will attract more consumer attention. To help achieve this goal, they've packed the DVD full of special features, as well as some interactive options. The film will be released on 2 discs, and both DVDs will come with their share of extras. The first disc will contain commentary tracks from Motonori Sakakibara, sequence supervisor Hiroyuki Hayashida, sets & props lead artist Tatsuro Maruyama, 'phantom supervisor' (evidently even digital beings need some sort of guidance) Takao Noguchi, animation director Andy Jones, editor Chris S. Capp, and staging director Tani Kunitake. There will also be storyboards, theatrical trailers, and production notes. The second disc will feature The Making of Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within, a documentary, a Final Fantasy music video, an alternate opening sequence, a mini-movie of Aki's dream, trailer exploration, character files, vehicle scale comparisons, and finally, character and environment development workshops.

If all of this isn't enough, the second disc also contains the Final Fantasy Shuffler, a program enabling users to re-edit and play back a scene from the movie. The film's complete screenplay, a visual tour of Square Pictures, screensavers, and Web links round out the extras to be found on the second disc. Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within grossed $30 million in North American theatres, and the Japanese release is expected to add significantly to this total. Both the DVD and VHS versions of the film will be released October 23rd.
