Trails of Cold Steel III

Falcom detailed some of its gameplay adjustments for its upcoming The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel III, primarily focusing on the combat system. The ring-based system for providing instuctions to party members from the previous two games has been replaced with a direct system where each option is assigned to a face button or direction of the D-pad. Combat will now also take place on the field rather than transitioning to a new combat screen.

In more specific details, the presence of Juna from Crossbell State offers an extra tactical aspect. She wields a gun/baton combination called a Gunbreaker, and is able to switch between its two modes. While in the baton mode, she has stronger stats, but while in gun mode she has a longer range and is able to hit multiple enemies.

Cold Steel III also features a new option called Brave Order. This allows players to activate an order, which grants an effect to the party for a set number of turns, without using up that character's turn. Orders use up Brave Points, which are generated during combat. The series' regular Crafts system, which lets characters use special abilities, also returns.

Trails of Cold Steel III is planned for release in Japan for PlayStation 4 on September 28, 2017. The previous two games were released by XSEED Games in North America and NIS America in Europe, with the second game winning RPGamer's Game of the Year award for 2016. XSEED Games also recently released the third game in the Trails in the Sky trilogy, which takes place in the same world as Trails of Cold Steel, for PC.
