God Eater 2: Rage Burst

Pascal Tekaia had the opportunity to try out the latest in the God Eater series at Bandai Namco’s booth. Here are his thoughts on God Eater 2: Rage Burst, and how  the game shapes up.the game is shaping up.

---

Following the release history of Bandai Namco's God Eater series is an interesting exercise. For each game released in Japan, a matching western release doesn't see the light of day until one to three years later, when an enhanced version finally reaches our shores. The limited use of different subtitles has added further confusion, as similar-sounding subtitles may belong to wholly different games. Enter God Eater 2: Rage Burst, a localized version of the remake of the sequel to the original game. Got it? Good.

The God Eater series has always been akin to the popular Monster Hunter series in gameplay: spend time in a hub location, accept a mission, step from the home base right onto the mission map, and then return once the mission objectives have been fulfilled. God Eater 2 doesn’t break the mold, but attempts to refine it by fine-tuning some of its gameplay systems and adding a few new wrinkles to the combat. The God Eaters — that is, the small group of people who have the ability to stand up to and defeat Aragami, evil natural forces threatening the land — use their mobile base, Fenrir, to take them to complete hunts and extermination missions wherever they may pop up. As such, the core gameplay of God Eater is centered around the combat, with the narrative bits happening between the combat missions.

Combat will be largely familiar to returning players. The God Eaters take on most missions in a four-person squad, with one character controlled by the player, though online multiplayer is also an option. Aside from normal attacks using the God Arc, a God Eater's specialized weapon, combat features optional tasks that can be completed. Called Blood Rage, these are special battle circumstances that must be met, like doing a certain amount of damage to enemies, and must always be completed within the next thirty seconds. If accomplished, these Blood Rage pledges between the God Eater and his God Arc will net him special bonuses or stat increases for a short while, making combat easier. Another new feature to the game comes in the form of Blood Arts, which are over four hundred unique skills that can be learned.

Successfully completing a mission nets the player points that can be spent on building affinity with his fellow party members, a process which has been refined for this entry in the series. It is these affinities characters can have for each other that drive the narrative forward between missions. The affinity characters have for each other drives the narrative forward between missions.God Eater 2: Rage Burst will release for PlayStation 4 and Vita, with Cross-Play and Cross-Save functionality enabled.
