Undead Darlings

Mr. Tired Media has returned to Kickstarter with its visual novel/RPG hybrid, Undead Darlings ~no cure for love~. Despite cancelling its previous crowdfunding effort in 2015, the developer continued work on the game and now feels better equipped to go ahead with its fresh campaign.

Undead Darlings puts the player in the role of Reginald "Reggie" P. Happenstahnce. After waking up from an alcohol-related coma, Reggie is informed by his childhood friend Pearl that society has collapsed following a zombie virus outbreak. Fortunately, not everyone afflicted with the virus has become mindless beings. Pearl and a number of girls retain their mind and conscience. Reggie resolves to continue his father's work in creating a cure, his father apparently being involved in the initial outbreak. Undead Darlings' visual novel portions give players choices throughout, with the options taken affecting which heroine Reggie grows closest to and whether or not she will be willing to be the test subject for Reggie's cure at the end.

The game's RPG sections involve crawling through the game's collection of dungeons. Exploration takes place in a first-person view with visible encounters and over twenty floors to adventure in. The turn-based battle screen pays homage to Phantasy Star IV, with the camera sitting behind the three-member party. The Exponential Exploitation (EE) System puts the focus on exploiting enemy weaknesses. Rather than applying a straight modifier to attacks, the EE System sees a multiplier build up with each vulnerability hit until players choose to unleash the modifier in one go. If players hit an enemy resistance at any point, however, the multiplier disappears.

Undead Darlings is being developed for PC, Mac, Linux, and PlayStation 4 with a planned release window of Q2 2017. Mr. Tired Media is partnering with MangaGamer for the game's Steam release, which will also see the game receiving a physical PC version. The developer is looking for $45,000 of funding by June 17, 2016, with those who pledge at least $18 (or who grab one of the limited number of $13 tiers available at the time of writing) able to receive a copy of the game as a backer reward.
