Diablo III launches tomorrow, and Blizzard is providing a Starter Edition of the game that acts as a free trial. The Diablo III Starter Edition allows players to reach level 13 and play Act I of the game up to the Skeleton King boss. Starter Edition players can only group with other Starter Edition players via the game's matchmaking service, and (obviously) will not be able to access the real-money auction house.
For the first thirty days after launch, accessing the Starter Edition requires a key that can be found in retail copies of Diablo III, so demo hopefuls will need to find a friend who has bought the game.
