PAX East - Quick Impressions



The Witcher 2: Enhanced Edition

Both the PC and Xbox 360 versions of The Witcher 2:Enhanced Edition were on display at PAX East. Though the 360 version didn't look quite as good as the high end PC demo, it still showed a great deal of graphical fidelity. Controls were perfectly suited to the Xbox 360 controller, controlling similar to other console action RPGs such as Dark Souls. Players without familiarity with the series should be able to jump in with little issue, as I and other attendants of the show were able to pick up and play the game with little to no instruction. The Witcher 2: Enhanced Edition will be available on April 17. Gamers who already own the PC version will be able to download the extra content from the new version for free at that time as well.

Dragon's Dogma

Dragon's Dogma has, in many places, been called "Monster Hunter for the west." Though the action based combat against the Chimera boss in the demo could feel like Capcom's popular series at times, this description couldn't be farther from the truth. Much more of a western RPG both in style and substance, the demo allowed players to roam around a bit of the game's large open environments and take part in two different boss battles depending on the class chosen. Combat is active and engaging, showing the development team's experience in making engaging action games. The AI controlled companions in the demo proved to be smart and capable companions. Though not much story was on display in the demo, the game promises to have an in-depth story, further distancing it from that Monster Hunter comparison. The demo was only a brief slice of the game, but it was enough to show that this is an action RPG that fans should keep an eye on.

Dragon Fantasy Book Two

The sequel to the iOS/PC/Mac retro RPG Dragon Fantasy was on display in an early form. Running on a PC, the game looked like a natural evolution of Dragon Fantasy, offering 16-bit style sprites. Not only are all party members displayed on screen, but monsters are as well, replacing random encounters. Combat appeared similar to the first game, which is very much in the classic Dragon Quest style with monsters displayed on screen and the party nowhere to be seen. Muteki has stated that this might change in the final version of the game which is slated to launch later this year, fans of classic turn-based RPGs should keep an eye on RPGamer for more info on this title.
