Final Fantasy VII was first released in Japan on January 31, 1997. The game came to North America on September 3, 1997 with a few improvements: additional FMV, tightened mini-game control, arrows indicating exits, an enhanced materia management system, and an added cutscene that helped clarify Cloud's past. These improvements were included in a third version of the game, titled Final Fantasy VII International, that was released only in Japan and included a new fourth disc with information, maps, character sketches, and general trivia about Final Fantasy VII.

Final Fantasy VII International was recently made available for download on the Japanese PlayStation Network. The game is entirely in Japanese as International was never released outside of Japan. The game can be played on either the PlayStation 3 or the PSP and is priced at ¥1,500 (about $14.95).

Final Fantasy VII is arguably one of the most popular titles in the series. It spawned the Compilation of Final Fantasy VII which included the spin-off titles Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII and Dirge of Cerberus: Final Fantasy VII, amongst other materials. At a recent screening for the Blu-ray version of Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children Complete, producer Shinji Hashimoto stated that the Compilation would be coming to a close with the movie's Japanese release on April 16, 2009. Of course, future Final Fantasy VII works were not ruled out completely.

As of yet, there is no indication whether or not Final Fantasy VII will be released on the North American PlayStation Network. Advent Children Complete should be coming to North America on June 7.
