Funcom, makers of the popular MMORPG Anarchy Online, has revealed its next project. The new game, entitled Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures will put players into a fantasy world filled with cruel gods, mythical creatures, and lost civilizations.

Gameplay in this world will resemble that of an action RPG. In Funcom's own words, Age of Conan is said to possess a "deep, story-driven single player experience," as well as a "brutal multiplayer end-game." Combat in this game will utilize an engine that allows players to control the direction of their weapons in real time, rather than watch a set of pre-programmed strikes. This engine is being called "Real Combat" because of its closer representation of a real battle. In large groups, players will be able to arrange troops of NPCs, create customized battle formations, then give the troops new commands in mid-battle. Players can team up with one another by forming guilds, after which they can attack enemy castles using manpower as well as catapult fire.

"I have always been a huge fan of Conan and his Hyborian universe, and to direct this game is a dream come true" said Game Director Gaute Godager. "We are truly trying to make this the ultimate representation of Conan's world, and we are filling it with features never before seen in an online game." Godager is a co-founder of Funcom and served as Game Director for Anarchy Online.

Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures will be on display at the upcoming Electronic Entertainment Expo in Los Angeles. Barring any unexpected problems, the game should be available some time within the first half of 2006. The game's official website can be found here.
