Lineage II

NCsoft Corporation has released the first major update to its MMORPG, Lineage II: The Chaotic Chronicle. Chronicle 1: Harbingers of War is free to all Lineage II subscribers via automatic download.

Building on the game's player-versus-player focus, the most anticipated feature of the update is the addition of large-scale castle sieges. Each server will have five castles available for conquest. Hundreds of players can take part in these sieges, with swordfighting, archery, magic, and Siege Golems--creatures that can be summoned to knock down castle walls. Once a castle is captured, a player can become lord and control the castle for two weeks, during which time he or she can hire mercenaries, collect taxes, and upgrade the castle against future sieges.

Many of the new quests in the update are designed to challenge high-level players. For example, the Dragon's Cave quest pits players against the Earth Dragon Antharas, who is capable of controlling a player's actions. Victory will require coordination among multiple players.

Other features of Chronicle 1 include new weapons and skills, as well as clan housing, with clans bidding on clan halls via an in-game auction system. Player and creature movement speeds have been increased, and there are a number of new player-versus-player arenas. The entire 3D game world has been expanded, with many of the new areas dedicated to high-level quests and challenges.

Lineage II is available now at most North American computer game outlets, with a suggested retail price of $49.99. This includes the first month of online gameplay; afterwards, there is a subscription fee of $14.95 per month.
