Reports of a new Fire Emblem title for the GameCube have been floating around since last January. Recently, Nintendo and developer Intelligent Systems confirmed the game's existence and provided a few relevant details.

Entitled Fire Emblem: Aoi Honoo no Kiseki, the game will resemble earlier titles in the series, with battles set on a square grid and directed by turn-based combat. The greatest change, however, is that the graphics will be 3D.

The story of Fire Emblem: Aoi Honoo no Kiseki follows a young boy named Ike. His father, Grail, is the captain of a mercenary unit, which also includes vice-captain Tiamat, chief-of-staff Senerio, and Ike's younger sister Mist. As the unit moves across the war-ravaged continent of Terius, Ike matures and learns a lot about his father's past.

Fire Emblem: Aoi Honoo no Kiseki is expected to blaze into Japanese GameCubes this winter. A North American release has not been announced, but it remains a possibility.
