With the original title still more than half a year away from release, LucasArts has announced an expansion to their highly anticipated Star Wars Galaxies, a MMORPG. Being touted as The Space Expansion, the add-on will not only introduce new races to the game, but will also make interstellar flight and star fighters a part of the game. Additionally, new characters will be made available.

Star Wars Galaxies is slated for release in 2002; announcing the expansion ahead of time is all part of LucasArt's strategy for the game. "The staggered release schedule of the space component of the Star Wars Galaxies series will benefit players because they will have time to establish their characters and explore different elements of the core game before we add the space layer,” according to Rich Vogel, director of development at Sony Online Entertainment’s Austin studio. “Once the space component becomes available, players who have been with us since the beginning will be ready to buy their own starships and launch into this new arena.”
