Developer Multithreaded Games has begun a Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign for its turn-based RPG Bevontule: Altar of Roots. Seeking $50,000 in funding, the developer cites Final Fantasy, Vagrant Story, Parasite Eve, Xenogears, and Shadow Hearts all listed as significant influences on the game.

Bevontule is set on the contintent of Onich, which surrounds a large inland sea. The continent was discovered by refugees some 1,500 years prior to the game. In the present time, Onich is being devastated by an expanding root-like network known as the Kelvari, which currently covers over half of the land, bringing with it creatures called Rootsouls. Players control a man named Bodom, who claims he has the ability to destroy the Kelvari and potentially save Onich.

Combat in the game is iniated through story events or by touching one of the enemies on the game's 3D maps. Character speed plays a key part in combat, with quicker character able to act more often, while movement is gridless, giving combatants a circle that they can freely move within on their turn. In addition to moving, players can attack or use a skill or item on their turn. Skills may require charging before they are used and also use up skill points. This can allow players to chain up multiple consecutive skills, which if achieved will provide combo bonuses.

Bevontule: Altar of Roots is being developed for PC, Mac, and Linux, with a demo currently available on GameJolt and itch.io. The campaign runs until March 1, 2018, with the game initially planned for release in 2019.
