Funcom has announced that it plans to relaunch its MMO The Secret World later this year. Originally released in 2012 as a subscription-based MMO, the relaunch, titled Secret World Legends, will be a free-to-play "shared-world action RPG" that will feature a revamped combat system, updated visuals, a redesigned progression system, and over one hundred hours of story and quests. There is currently no information regarding any in-game monetization. Funcom has given the game a spring release period.

For the currently available title The Secret World, Funcom will keep the servers online but moving forward all new content will be released for Legends. Since the game is relaunching, all current players moving to Legends will have to start over as characters will not be transferred. However, Funcom is planning a process in which to transfer over cosmetic items and setting up a system for name reservations.

Set in an alternate modern day, one where myths and monsters are real, players will become embroiled in a cold war that will take them from a foggy New England town to the dry desert of Egypt. Players will ally themselves with one of several clandestine societies — the Templars, the Illuminati, and the Dragon — as the attempt to discover the mysteries of the secret world.
