The indie update column takes a break this time around, however, to replace it we have the return of the crowdfunding check-in series. Two campaigns go under the spotlight in this entry: Borealys Games' Mages of Mystralia and inbetweengames' All Walls Must Fall.

Mages of Mystralia

Mages of Mystralia is a spellcrafting-focused fantasy RPG from Borealys Games. The game's story is being penned by Ed Greenwood, creator of the Forgotten Realms setting for Dungeons & Dragons. Players control Zia, a young girl born with magic power in a kingdom where the arcane is banned. In order to learn how to control her magic she goes into exile, meeting various other exiled mages throughout her adventure.

Combat is focused around a deep spellcasting system. There are four basic spell types, but these can be extensively modified by various runes. For example, players can start with a simple orb of fire, but after attaching the move and duplicate runes to it, it becomes a triple fireball projectile spell. Spells can also be nested within each other, allowing creations like an ice statue that regularly fires projectiles.

Mages of Mystralia is being developed for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. The game is already well into its development, with the Kickstarter campaign deliberately aiming at a low C$25,000 total, which has already been surpassed, and allowing the developer to use those funds primarily for extra features and other additions. The campaign ends on April 15, 2017, with those who pledge at least C$25 receiving a copy of the game as part of their backer rewards.

All Walls Must Fall

inbetweengames is a German studio set up by three former members of Yager Development. The studio's first commercial game is a tactical RPG titled All Walls Must Fall and the studio has turned to Kickstarter to help fund development.

All Walls Must Fall is set in Berlin in the year 2089 in a world where the Cold War never ended and time-manipulation technology is being used by both sides. As tensions reach the breaking point following each side's countering of each other's action, a rogue nuclear strike threatens to cause chaos. Both sides send their own agents back in time to discover who is responsible for the incident and to try and prevent it from happening.

The developer lists games like XCOM, Braid, Syndicate, The Banner Saga, and Crypt of the Necrodancer as inspirations for the game, which uses a real-time-with-pause combat system. While paused, players can give various orders to their squad before watching them play out. Fortunately, they also have access to time-manipulation technology, and can rewind time if things do not go to plan. The campaign takes place over a series of missions, and combat may not be the only way for players to achieve their objectives.

inbetweengames is looking for €15,000 in funding by April 19, 2017. All Walls Must Fall is being developed for PC, Mac, and Linux, with an initially planned release date of September 2017. Those who pledge at least €13 will receive a copy of the game as part of their backer rewards.
